    Angelfish

Best results we had with spawning Angels is to have them in a separate tank with just a sponge filter going and some slate or a terracotta pot (turned upside down). Once the fry are free swimming we have taken them out and put them into a tank of their own again, with just a sponge filter, so grown on. You will get a lot of losses with the undergravel as the fry do get sucked into the stones. The sponge filters are very cheap .. only $12 approx for a double one but we just use a single one in a our tank and that was under $10. We have only ever taken the eggs out once rather than waiting for the fry to free swim. By leaving them the parents do the all the cleaning, air circulation etc much better than we can. I always try and leave some fry behind to let the parents 'fuss' over something. Invariably they eat them when they are ready to lay again. Hope you have good results as they are such fun to watch grow.

Awesome site. I have spent the last hour going over everything in there and reading everything! I am very impressed and what a stunning tank to have in your home. I would never get anything done as I would just sit and watch it all the time! I would like to have one myself but for the fact that I have no idea what to do or how to do it, let alone the expense, I will just be happy looking at others. Congrats.
  6. I was offered a job transfer last week but turned it down as we would never be able to afford to live there! Good job but not enough to ever buy a house down there. I was born in Nelson so would have loved to go 'home'. However the north aint too bad. The locals are quite friendly! I think no matter where people live it is ok otherwise why would they live there? Nowhere is that far from anywhere. If the best fish are in Auckland well that is a good excuse to go for a drive. Christchurch have some amazing shops to and I would love to be able to 'drive' there and get a Zebra Pleco! So good and bad points both sides of the ditch. Be grateful ... we could be in Australia!!! (West Island)

    SEA Chest!

Cool idea! Different view for the fish too. Instead of faces they get legs! Hope the site comes along for you.
  8. Thank you very much Dave. Sorry to be such a pain with the late request! Much appreciated.
  9. Hi Dave Ok ... if we can get either a Motel or Studio unit would be great. We dont mind sharing if need be but as we have only been married for 6 months and this is our first trip away not sure anyone would want to share with us.   seriously though ... anything that has a double would be great. Look forward to catching up with you guys too. Who else from Hamilton is coming?
  10. Hi Dave I know this is late notice but ... Could hubby and I come along? Is there any accommodation left and if so what is the cost? Would rather stay overnight than travel up and back on the one day. Looking forward to your reply.

    A Prowler from OZ

Hi there and welcome to a great site. We had the same problem with my tanks as well until we purchased a water purifier. One of those sort that are used for a spa pool and since then we have never had any problems. The councils seem to enjoy chucking all sorts of chemicals into the water to keep us healthy!  We also added a internal cannister filter to help the four undergravels do their job. We dont seem to have any problems with water clarity etc. May not be any help to you but this has worked for our tanks. Happy fish keeping.
  12. We have a large plastic rubbish bin which we filled with water last year and added some sheep poo. It has been outside since and we always have plenty of live food for the fish. The water is now green and every three months or so we put a few more watered down sheep poo's in there to help it along the way. We wash the live food under running water before feeding out but have neither had any problems with it at all and the fish go nuts on it. I find it is great food for baby angels from about one to two months onwards but only the smaller bugs of course. Much cheaper than LFS.
  13. You are such a dedicated mum goldie! Mine get a frozen bloodworm dumped in the tank. They then chase it around and get them as it defrosts in the tank. Can't say I have had any problems with excess algae either.

$202.00 for a Pleco! Gee I may just have to go and buy half a dozen of them. NOT! Sound nice though.

    Hey

Hi and welcome. You would have been very sad to see such great fish go. Hopefully you get your wish soon and get to have your bigger tank. Hope you enjoy being here with neat people and great knowledge.
  16. Welcome to a great site. Hope you can think about becoming part of a great little club in Palmerston. They are a friendly bunch of people that don't bite! Tank will look great once fishies in. Keep us informed on progress.
  17. Welcome Robbo Hope you get as much out of this site as I have. Never too old to learn thankfully  Do join a club. You get together with other 'fishy' people and can be a lot of fun and make great friends, along with learning more about a wonderful hobby. The bonus' you get from joining a club are also great as a lot of petshops etc give you discounts. Any saving in today's world is great! Pity you weren't closer as you could have joined the Palmerston North club but then again have always heard great stuff about the Kapi-Mana club. I myself would like to try again with Discus after having a bad run of it but the expense stops me. I will stick with breeding my Angels for now. Maybe when I have a sold hundred of them again I may get a Discus or two. Have fun here!
  18. Same eggs from same container. They have been stored in the fridge for approx 8 months. Was working fine until this few batchs of angels born and now getting shocking results. Have had to revert to feeding fry microworms. Am using same sea salt as always. No changes that I can think of.
  19. I have had problems with latest batch of brine shrimp. These the same eggs I have always used. Do the eggs have a use by date? These are not old and have been kept in the fridge until use. Am getting very poor hatching rates after always have excellent results.
  20. Just to add my experience with brine shrimp eggs :- I use a 2 litre milk bottle. I drilled a hole in the top of the lid (big enough to fit some air tubing down). I put cold tap water in the bottle till it comes just over the bottom part of the handle. I then put in 3 teaspoon of sea salt and one teaspoon of brine shrimp eggs. I then put this into a tank of water to cover about half of the bottle (too much and the milk bottle floats.) This water has a heater in it and water is heated to 28 degrees. (I use a one foot by 6 inch tank for this). I then put an air pump on the air tubing and put this through the hole on the top on the lid and make sure the tubing goes all the way to the bottom of the bottle. Get the air going and it will bubbly away madly. I leave it for a minimum of 24 hours. I have had some good and bad hatch rates but find this is the easiest for me. When it comes time to harvest. Turn of the air pump and leave to sit for about ten minutes. I get a container that will hold all the water from the bottle. I place a hanky over the container attaching with pegs to hold firm. Then just siphon out the brine shrimp from about 1 inch from the bottom. I usually dont take all of the water etc as once I have enough brine shrimp I just return the water and leave for another 24 hours. By this time I find there is no more hatching and I syphon it out (leaving the empty shells etc from the bottom behind). Then just use a teaspoon etc to scrape the brine shrimp off the hanky and feed out. I have also frozen any extra in case and this is still eaten with relish so must be ok (but not as good as fresh). Maybe it is not the best way but it works for me. Hope it will help if not I have writers cramp for nothing!
