  1. Do you have any thoughts on how to cure it? I did not know you could not buy them anymore - it would have been 3 years ago we purchased these fish. They are great fish, large and super peaceful. Chris
  2. Hi Yes the fish is still alive although it looks to have slowed down and sometimes hangs out in one corner of the tank. chris
  3. I can not remember the name of this fish but they are great - large about 6"+ and very mellow. I have 3 in my tank along with Discus + some other small fish and they are very peaceful. Just before I went on holiday I noticed this fish (1 of the 3) is sort of bloated with a lump out the side - I then went on holiday for a month and it was worse on my return. Over the last 3 weeks it is just getting worse. Any thoughts on what it could be or how to resolve - or should I just put the fish down? Chris
  4. Thanks for the suggestions. Food is probably an issue so will reduce - have been away and someone else was feeding so they probably overfed as well. I would like to remove them "all" but a reduction by 90% would be nice. The tank is about 300 litres... thanks Chris
  5. I have a snail problem - it is getting worse by the week. I am not sure how to cure this problem. I have 3 large yo yo loaches When they were small they seemed to control the population of snails, but now they are large they do not seem to control anything. I do not want to buy any more fish but I would like to control the snails which as you can see are everywhere. Chris
  6. The fish died later that day! chris
  7. I have managed to get some DronCit tablets from the vet which contain 50MG of Praziquantel per tablet. The fish is worse than I realised and can not really swim and is floating around - I do not think he will make it... Chris
  8. Thanks I will get onto it. Do you know if it contains instructions when you buy from them? Chrs
  9. I have a Discus who is not happy and is hiding out the back and he has stopped eating a few days ago. Prior to this he has been loosing his appitite and has been very thin. My partner mentioned this to a man at Redwood aquotics and he suggested that maybe flat worms may be the problem. He mentioned a product called Praziquantel Do you suggest using this? I can setup a hospital tank and dose this with only the fish in the tank The hospital tank is 30" x 15" x 15" high If this was a solution what dose would I use? and how often and what water changes etc.. He also suggested getting the product with no additives ie other ingredients. Where can I buy this product in Christchurch? Pet Shop, Vet? Chris
  10. Thanks I ended up getting some Prime from Oganisum. chris
  11. I am in cashmere, other than going to work (riccarton) I have not been out anywhere. I have also heard that leaving water in the sun can help remove clorine. Maybe a combination of the two - Prime or Stress coat + sun? Do you know how long the prime or stress coat takes - is instant? or 30 minutes etc? wait 6 hours to be safer? Thanks for the offer of the water - I will try to decide what action to take Chris
  12. Hi All I luckily did not loose my tanks in the Feb22nd Quake - One tank 4" the stand broke and the tank hit the wall but stayed horizontal even through mag 5.5 after shocks. I have lost a few fish including one large discus. I kept heat + air to the tanks (filters stopped and I could not get them going until recently) via an invertor connected to my car for 3 days and then by a petrol generator for the next 10 days until we got power back (that was monday evening) I am now in despirate need to do water changes. I have been buying small amounts of water and using that but it is not cost efective and probably does not help a lot. I have an aqua one 880 which is about 350 litres, and a 4" bow front which is about 250 litres (currently sitting on the ground empty), and a hospital tank about 80-90 litres (holding fish from the bow front where the stand broke) I read on another forum post about some chemicals to treat clorine (they were talking about turtles I think) * sodium thiosulphate * SEACHEM PRIME I have 7 Large discus in one tank and general community fish in the other. I just do not want to stuff anything up and kill them after all the hard work to keep them alive over the last few weeks. Chris
  13. Cricky you have had a hard time there Lynnie I have been lucky (so far) with my 2 tanks (3 if you include the one at work) - no losses at all. I really do not know what I would do if I saw my tanks fall over - I am amazed that they have survived and I have watched them on the sharp shock the other morning and they moved around far too much for comfort. None of which helps you - but I guess - you are OK, and in the end we must look after ourselves and our families first. My Partner Pam was not to happy when I said go stand and support that tank over there.... She did not do that anyway. All the best for the coming weeks, which will be hard for all directly affected.... Chris
  14. Very interesting - I wonder how close it will be in 6 months time? Chris
  15. That is really sad that she lost all her tanks and fish.... I guess there will be a lot of people with issues like this. I have two 350 litre tanks and so far they have held up. Lots of water on the ground on Saturday, not so bad this morning, but this morning I was watching the tanks from the lounge wobbling with the major after shock today. When we lost power on Saturday for 10 hours I went and bought a 12 - 230 volt invertor to run one of the tanks. I connected it to the car battery. The other tank I took water out into a bucket, and then boiled some of it in a pot on the gas hob, and then put the water back into the bucket and back into the tank to try to raise the temperature. The tank dropped about 8-10 degress F over the 10 hours. At this time no fish have got sick but the Discus do appear to be more timid. I have an earthquake page on my weather site at http://weather.crowe.co.nz/quake/ which lists the shocks in a graph. Overall I am very lucky with very minor damage to the property. chris
  16. No I purchased him seperately, can't remember from where now. I have lost a few over the years which is always sad. chris
  17. Well I have done it, first time I have updated the website in almost 5 years.... Terrible. http://fish.crowe.co.nz/archive/2010/08/23/924.aspx
  18. I have ended up buying two Red Discus from Organisum in Ilam, Christchurch. John had two different red ones, a Malboro Red, and what he called a Super Red. I took both and have added them to my 350l tank. It already had 4 VLarge discus. My original ones are Blue Turq, and are at least 100% bigger (Johns were quite large already), they settled in without any squabble. They look great - Time I update my web site! Chris.
  19. I checked out Organism today He has a nice selection of small-medium to medium size discus - all the same price of $137.99 He had a couple of reds ones, a Red Marlboro discus and a Super Red they looked great. I was shoping for a cheaper price than that. I am actually quite keen to see them grow up so I do not mind buying smaller. Chris
  20. Thanks Mike I will check him out this week. Cheers Chris
  21. I am looking to get a few extra small friends for my Discus tank and was trying to find out who is selling Discus and will ship them to Christchurch. I tried to contact Discus Haven (twice) with no response - is he out of town? Cheers Chris
  22. They generally get into your tank from plants that you buy from Pet Shops. The snail eggs are like little pin heads in a gell that sticks very well to plants They grow in my little tank at work quite easily Chris
  23. Thanks for your thoughts - I think I may just pull the tank apart and start again. It may be the easiest and best option as far a a redesign goes as well. Cheers Chris
  24. Hi I have a small tank at work and I am going to move the fish in it to my home aquarium over the Christmas break. This tank is riddled with snails - literally 1000's probably - most tiny and I remove lots every week Since there will be no fish in the tank I am wondering what I can do to kill off all the snails in a short time. The tank itself is setup and I do not want to pull the tank down and start from scratch but this could be a possibility. Aparantly copper is good at killing snails, but how much would one use? and does it work on the snail eggs? Any ideas appreciated. Chris
