  1. Does your 880 filter make a lot of noise? I just filled my new tank last night (no instructions provided with the Tank or the Stand) and I am not happy with the noise I am getting from the filter. There is a drowne sound which is amplified when the light unit is on the tank and even worse when the feeder flap is lowered. Also there is quite a lot of noise from the water exiting the pipes onto the filter material. I fell like binning the internal filter as I do not think I could live with the sound - I can hear it in every room in the house. Please let me know your experiences? See my blog for my detail on my Aqua One UFO 880 http://fish.crowe.co.nz
  2. Probably nothing but marketing... I got a small bag from a supplier in Christchurch for free so I just wanted to make sure. Cheers Chris
  3. Is it safe to use Gibston Valley Schist in my tank? I know I will have to scrub each peice to remove the dust and other stuff on it. Also does it adjust the PH or hardness of the water? Chris
  4. I went into Animates today and their tanks have a blue painted background and it looks very nice. I spoke to a lady Katy and she said it was painted with a water based paint and most tanks had 4 coats. It does make it look very nice - so I may take this option. I suppose it also depends on what colour I could use - I am not sure I would want to use black but it may be the best.
  5. Thanks Jude I will have a look see and see what I can find that I like.. I just want to get my tank and then I will know more..... Chris
  6. I am trying to decide what I should do on the back walls of my aquarium (I am getting an Aqua one 880 Corner Tank) It is 650mm high and 750mm wide on each side. Some thoughts I have had: Buy expensive aquarium scene backing (although I do not like most of them) Stick black paper over the back Stick black plastic over the back Place black weed map over the back (has a small weave pattern) Place black fabric over the back (could maybe then be washed) Does anyone have any thoughts on any of these options or any other options? Chris
  7. HI Welcome to the forum - I am a newby - I only joined in the forums yesterday - I wish I got pressies like that. I will be happy when I get my tank - about 5 days or so from now. Tropical fish are such a family friendly hobby..... I hope we both get a lot of good advice and in time can offer advice to others. Cheers Chris
  8. At this point I would like to have the following but I am not too sure - I have to do some more research. Neons (10-20) Angles (2-3) Discuss (2) Rummy Nose Tetra (5-10) Catfish of some type (1-2) I have to check if they can all live together - I know discus like the temperature a bit warmer than the angles - but I have seen them in books in the same tank. I have seen Rummy Nose Tetrea and Discuss in the same tank at Critter Kingdom in Christchurch. Neons I think will be OK as long as the angles do not eat them. Your thoughts on my potential selection? I would also like to have a lot of plants in the tank to make a nice aquascape. I read an interesting thing yesterday from a book I bought (Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants) about using some large peices of COAL as rocks in the tank - I never would have thought about doing that. Are there any sites that show compatibility between different fish species? Cheers Chris
  9. Hi Jude At this point I think the one tank will be enough - but I am sure that is what everyone says. Cheers Chris
  10. Hi I just wanted to say Hi as I am a new fish keeper - well I will be when I get my tank which should be next week. I have bought an Aqua One 880 which is a corner tank - size approx 300L I have started a blog about my fish tank at http://fish.crowe.co.nz I hope that I will become part of this community over the next weeks, months and years. I use to have a community tank of 36 x 18 x 18 tank about 10 years ago, my new tank is also going to be a community tank hopefully with a large number of plants as well. Well I look forward to the times ahead - I just can't wait to get the tank so I can start the process. Cheers Chris
