  1. I have Juwel Rio 180. I got sick of the amount of room the internal filter took up and the pump on the thing stopped working twice. I replaced it with an Aqua One 1200 and I have found it to be a great filter. it is quieter than the Fluval 204, 304 and 404s I have had on previous tanks and doesn't need cleaning all the time like the fluvals.
  2. Hi, I have just been looking through some pfk magazines, drooling over some of the beautiful planted tanks. I notice in them a beautiful lotus plant, same shape as a tiger lotus but with beautiful red leaves. Does anyone know if this varitey is available in NZ as I would love to get my hands on some?
  3. Thanks for the ideas. I have always had fluval external filters previous to this. Do you have the ceramic noodles on top of the filter wool or the other way around? I would image the filter wool would be on top to remove large particles before it reaches the noodles?
  4. Hi, I have just bought a Ar 510 on trademe. I am going to use the inbuilt filter and was wondering what woould be the best media to use in the top.
  5. Hi. It's a while since I've visited Auckland but will be there next week. Are Origin still in Brown's Bay? I can't remember the street name. I will definitely want to visit them when I am in Auckland as I have got some excellent fish from there in the past.
  6. Thanks everyone for your help. Today I bought a Juwel Rio 180.
  7. Ive recently moved to the Waikato from Northland. I had 4 big tanks u there - a 5ft malawi tank and a 4ft dscus tank being my favourites. I sold them before I moved down as it was going to be too hard to move them all that way. I really miss my tanks and fish and need another tank, but this time I am sticking to one tank and not progressing again to mts. I also have limited room in this new place so I want one really nice tank, which is why I am looking at the aquaone and the juwel tanks. I definitely don't want a noisy filter, but I also don't want to start changing things. I want a good tank that comes with everything and does a good job with filtering and lighting.
  8. Thanks for the help. I am now thinking of looking more closely at the juwels
  9. Hi, I am looking at buying a new aquarium. This time I want a full setup like a Juwel or AquaOne. Does anyone have experience of both of them. I like the Aquaones as the filter is in the lid and doesn't take up tank space like the Juwel ones. The Juwels have T5 lighting, whereas the Aquaones don't. Anyone got an opinion as there are things I like about both.
  10. I lost one of my baby demasoni. When I cleaned out the hang on filter, there he was in the bottom of the filter under the media. He doesn't seem to have suffered and is happy as back with the others.
  11. It doesn't look that great, but works well. I stick a spoon or knife (stainless steel type) through the middle of the zuccini and it sinks really well, and is not poisonous like lead.
  12. The white lines in schist are not lime, they are quartz. This will not alter the pH.
  13. Mine really likes the tetra colour bits. He always zooms around the tank trying to get them before the discus can.
  14. I think that Jansens in Silverdale has some small babies.
  15. You can get female fighters. They are often for sale on Trade me, there is one for sale on there at the moment. I bought two females from Hollywood Fish farm in Auckland recently. You may be able to get some sent down to you if you can't find any in your area.
  16. The books say they prefer neutral or slightly acidic pH so will they be Ok long term at this pH.
  17. The pH in my discus tank is 7.6. How do I get it back down to 7 or lower? A problem is my tapwater which is pH 7.4, so doing more water changes won't help. The tank has been set up only a couple of months. I used a dark gravel from Jansens. They said it would produce an acidic pH, but it obviously hasn't. I would greatly appreciate some help. My tank is planted with a couple of large pieces of bogwood.

    Hi

Thanks Pegasus for telling me about this site. It looks like I will spend lots of time here. I have already found out lots of great information. The auratus I got when I first started the tank. I bought a whole set up on trademe as the person wanted to have marine fish. The lumpheads and lionheads were bought on trademe but from different people.

    Hi

Yes I am eileenc2 on trademe. My family are close to Matamata in Putaruru. In my Malawi tank I have zebras (many different colours), kenyi, giraffes, Labeotropheus trewavasae, electric yellows, auratus. I am also raising dolphin, lionhead and peackock fry in a separate tank as well as babies produced by the others in the tank. I bought the peacock, lionhead and dolphin babies on trademe.

    Hi

This is my first time on this site. It was recommended to me today by a person I bought a fish keeping data base off. I have had fish for a few years now. I started with a 3 foot community tank with all sorts in it. Learnt some lessons along the way. I then set up a 4 ft Malawi tank. Then a 5ft by 2 ft tank with 2 oscars, 2 severums, a parrot, convicts, T bar cichlids and some others. I am now tired of my community tank and have resettled all those fish in a 3ft tank in my classroom (I am a science teacher) and I am starting to set up a discus tank. So I have three large tanks at home and 2 3ft tanks at school. My partner reckons it has become an obsession, but I just love my fish. I am looking forward to meeting other people who love fish as much as I do, and learning more especially as I set up my discus tank as any advice on what to be careful of would be appreciated.
