    sand

I rake my sand bed every few days....stops any buildup and keeps the sand moveing.......No need to vacume it at water changes...in the sea on a reef the sand is constantly moving with tides.....I love the different ways the sand moves around constantly changing ......and my wrasse helps.....he's always grabbing big mouthfulls of sand sifting through it looking for food...my (berlin) protein skimmer also LOVES it when I rake my sand.....lol....If we could get crabs and other critters to burrow down and clean our sand beds we would ALL be a lot happier.

    sand

I took my sand out and replaced it with another product that jansens have in there big reef tank....gets a bit blown about but doesnt get any algie on it and it stays white.......and doesnt seem to get food etc traped in it.....
  3. ive had a six line wrasse in my reef for over a year....he leaves everything alone including the two shrimp....no problems at all with him.
  4. bleach into the tank!!!!!!! ouch!!!!poor tank.
  5. cool......dont use mineral water it contains to many minerals that your tank doesnt need....(pure dew) is the best.......it cost me about $24 a week....ive been using it for a year with my reef....no problems....worth it not to have problems with your tank....lol....DI units are costly but Im saving up to get one later this year....
  6. oh dear......good thing ive already done my water change for feb......
  7. I can see takapuna boat ramp will be busy with people collecting salt water today....opps.....high tides already been and gone at 7-58am..... What a beautiful morning anyway......cleaned out my skimmer yesterday and WOW what a difference its made....
  8. Hi Beechy...I wouldn't use tap water in aucland for your water changes or top ups....if you dont have a RO or DI unit go to the supermarket and get (Pure Due) water....its about $6-00 for 10 litres its been through DI/RO and is totally safe for a reef system....I use it for my top up water supply......And the containers are perfect for collecting NSW in...
  9. it will take a good 5 to 6 weeks before the tank is ready to put anything into it except maybe a few damsels....or you can start off with a few freshwater mollys...sailfin mollys do well in a new marine tank...they even breed like crazy.....but once the tank is ok to put marines in you'll need to catch the mollys......lots of fun.......mollys can handle the high nitrites and nitrates....good luck.
  10. Would hate the salt bill....1500 litre water changes A WEEK!!!!
  11. Guys ...go have a look at reef centrals new tank of the month!!!! MY DREAM TANK!!!
  12. patience patience patience!!!!!!! Is the key!!!!!!!!!!! Dont try and hurry things up......that is the number one rule with a marine tank!!!!
  13. just a suggestion....you have your seio streem upside down..... works better if its hanging from the suction connector.
  14. Hollywood fish farm have combs...they will cut a piece to whatever length you want it.

    Bio Balls

Bio balls just add more nitrates to the tank....had them in my sump but took them out!!!!! now I have less nitrates and ammonia in the tank....the live rock in your tank should be enough to act as a bio filter. Good luck.
  16. Well I had red slime covering 90% of my rocks...started adding vodka to the tank.... added more waterflow (seio streems) and a better skimmer(berlin) and 8 weeks later no algie at all ANYWHERE!!!!!I think a combination of all three helped to squash the algie.
  17. I just brought an electronic fly swatter....looks like a tenis racket except when you hit the flys with it it frys them....lots of fun for the whole family....hehe
  18. hey was at hollywood yesterday....brought a clam.... they are now stocking tunze products...streems and other tunze gear....about time someone stocked it....bloody expencive though....
  19. lawnmower blennies are (one) of the only fish that will eat all the bubble algie as well apart from foxfaces....
  20. The power filter I hooked up over night was full of carbon and filter wool so as to clear as much of the water as possible.
  21. well its mt first try at using natural salt water today for my water changes.....collected the water yesterday and tested it.... everything was fine except the salinity which is 0.027 at 25 degrees...so just adding some fresh water before adding to my tank. I had the water heating over night and pumping it through an eheim power filter...so its looking pretty good now......here goes...... Warick.
  22. Does anyone know where you can get marine world magazine from in auckland? jansens use to stock them but don't seem to anymore.
  23. if you go have a look at jansens reef the have a huge amount of water flow belting out around the tank and the tank has never looked better.
  24. well my leathers love lots of flow...the more the better...three power heads and one seio....adding another seio soon...theres so much water movement at the surface that im expecting the water to jump right out of the tank....
  25. hey kermit we usually go at about the middle of october for two weeks...best time...still the dry season before the rains...so got a bit of a wait till we go again....in the meantime i can sit at home look into my tank and pretend im at the south beach on mana....hehe
