  1. Ok sweet, I did read through that but I didnt read this part correctly.. So I think thats means im ok...... hurrah I wont glue anything, I'll make sure its all sweet before I commit myself haha.
  2. How much do these pic axe things cost rougly? Are they available in nz or imported? Edit: on their price list nothing is over 85pounds - most are half that, so it looks pretty cheap. (I didnt know what I was looking for) It would be a cool thing to have, "I have to go, my tank needs me"
  3. Thanks man, but no longer on the search, - someone has kindly offered for me to borrow their one. Which is good - I need all the money I can muster to spend on blasted plumbing.
  4. Did you try the same size? I just really cant be bothered busing all the way back there  . 50mm is huge - what are the measurements of the durso "corner" in your tank? Is it guaranteed not to work the way it is now? Good thing about Mico at least is I can take it back.
  5. I just went and bought the hason fitting, and basicially everything needed for the overflow side of things - $80 without a ball valve. Bloody expensive, its not even pressure pipe and that includes a discount too! The durso is 40mm, and so is the hanson bulkhead fitting - the guy on www.dursostandpipes.com says that you need a wider durso than the bulkhead- mine are the same, is this going to be ok? I did know about this, but I'm thinking (and hoping) that the pipe is so wide that it wont be a problem. Otherwise It'd go from a 40mm bulkhead to a 50mm durso - which is humongous, and seems ridiculously large to fit in the tank. I also got a screw top valve for it(not an end cap), to hopefully make adjusting the air flow easy.

    Fluval FX5

How much do the go for roughly?
  7. Damn I thought I'd found a 50mm one with a 35mm one for $30, but they chrome plated it for some reason - so its for "ornamental uses only" http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... d=51339466 Weird.
  8. I dont know what any of that stuff would cost, but the thing in that magazine might be worth a look.
  9. Got some "techie" help. Silicon Chip magazine had a project using a cell phone to autodial on command. It wouldb't be difficult to arrange a PIC (or PIC-Axe) microcontroller to drive a modem. They handle temperature sensors pretty well, too. It's trivial to detect power off ... a transformer and diode, which could be part of the charger for the battery which would run the unit when its needed. I asked what issue of the magazine its in.
  10. The laguna up7 according to the box is :100W, at 240v, and 129W at 120v
  11. Oh yeah - I'm beginning to start to think about my lighting - gonna DIY a hood (well try to - last time I did this I bought $110 worth of wood thats sitting in the garage  ) Anyways, since this is for an octo tank(well, and other things that may or may not get eaten) real lighting isnt required - but perhaps you guys have some suggestions for what would look cool? I really like the blue colour of the t5's - (my tanks 1300 long will they fit?), and I dont wanna spend much. So any ideas? Ohh and I just realised my Wharehouse moonlights are not gonna be very helpful - octopuses vision is heightened in the blue part of the spectrum- meaning it would be like blasting daylight at him, Bugger it. One cool thing is if I get red "moon" lights, I can see it but it cant see me.
  12. Another quick question - my tank is 575mm tall, I'm trying to workout what glass thickness will be required for the durso. I think the tank is 10mm, or 12mm, but am I correct in thinking that 6mm will be thick enough? The majority of the durso section will be full with water all the time - so the pressure will be roughly even - just wanted to make sure.
  13. Is there something special about this tenellus stuff? It seems to me if you can't tell the difference between that and some of the photos - for all visual purposes it's the same thing. Is it unique in some way?
  14. http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/1 ... sic-sleep/ Come on, take the plunge. Effectivly you could get 29 hours out of the day, 30 if you push it.
  15. Oh ok you were getting it distilled too. Yeah, its good stuff, Its pretty much the one on the left - the euro 50L. It's pretty strong straight! Fire water. That brownish tint is probably bacterial growth and gunk ect. I think water changes are probably more beneficial in freshwater when using vodka, because in sw tanks lots of the new gunk that is created just gets skimmed out.
  16. Thats the one, That whole top bit comes off- see where there's a grey bit on the left, it unclips right off, leaving an upright unthreaded bit with a little o-ring near the top. If that makes sense.
  17. So with the up7, according to the box it has 32mm(external) pipe fittings - how am I supposed to connect this to pvc? Did you use those hose clippy things? Arent you supposed to keep the diameter the same the whole way up?
  18. Cheers guys!!!, good tips alright , so I'll be going same as surphews - good to know that it can handle the same pump as mine. 40mm (can you confirm this is the internal measurement?) pipe , meaning I'll have to drill a 50mm hole. Thats a bloody huge hole! I'll go buy the fitting first and then go from there in picking a suitable drill bit. Is building a durso to fit this going to be easy? And do you guys think a redundancy is necessary? - There isnt that much water in the return section - ~40L, so it wouldnt be a major flood.
  19. At these such low concentrations I cant imagine it doing anything. Are you not able to tell me about sourcing the alcohol(without my impending death)? When it comes off my still it's at 92% - 95% , but to tell the truth its a lot of work and is more expensive - so I'd rather be lazy. I believe I looked into buying it, I think a permit from maf or something was needed, aka a legitimate use for it. Which I now have. Not that drinking it shouldnt be a legitimate use
  20. Definately not, well at least in my case. - I have only ever kept (in my lifetime!!) two fresh water turtles - one of which died. My salt water experience is technically zero. But - I have read up for ages about it online, -looking back a book would be a good idea, it has everything you need listed. Online its hard to know what you need to learn about- if that makes sense. There are so many things to think about in saltwater, and untill you get used to it new things you havent even considered keep popping up. Definatly ask if you can go see someones tank too - you'll see we arent psychos on a newbie slaughtering rampage. , and youll get good advice.
  21. Very well post edited - what is poppy "short" for?
  22. Dudette (sorry) dont worry too much about annoying people - something about saltwater makes everyone confrontational. I think Pies has been consistantly on this forum since 2002? You can imagine how many newbies have asked the same things since then(this does include me!), its great he's still even answering! Alright first up - definate step, get a skimmer. If you find one you like the look of bring it up here and people will give you an honest opinion about it. Second thing you might want to look into is getting a sump... http://www.melevsreef.com/what_sump.html Your current equipment would probably be ok for a fish only tank. There are heaps of cool fish that you cant keep in a reef tank, so you'd have big options. I dont know if anyone here has a fish only setup? Decide specfically what you want to keep, anemones are difficult - they need good strong lighting good water conditions and high flow. Fish only is relativly easy. Soft corals, - lowish good lighting, and lowish flow. Hard corals, same as anemones. I suggest going for the soft coral tank - you get cool corals, reef fish, and shrimps ect, but without the difficulty of the anemones or sps. Then you can always upgrade relativly easily to them if you want to.
  23. Here's what it'll look like - any problems with this?
  24. My tank is 1270L x 570hx 400w. Sump is 900 length x 300 wide x 430 high I have a up7 too. I have thought about the problem of too much flow, - I was thinking about something like this..... This way I can remove a bit of head height and have control of the flow. I'll try to find my original plumbing plan.
