  1. Its 300 watts by the looks of it. I think this is what it is.......... http://www.parex.co.nz/zenith/zenith_do ... illtap.pdf Not bad for $20 - even if you only use it for its intended purpose.

Ok so the symbiots are algae, but if the stuff is aiding the algae within the corals surely it would cause a bloom of the normal algaes about the tank too? Is there an increase in skimmate from adding it? To have an effect such a short amount of time perhaps its a plant hormone?

I love these threads Anyways, I can see where Laytons coming from - personally it would annoy me not to know what I was adding to the tank - just coz I'm a nosey bugger but also because I like to be informed. I also realise that the company obviously doesnt want to divulge its trade sectrets. A question for Layton - what do you define as healthy? For me I spose the best indicator would be growth rates and colouration -(based on what I've been exposed to). However heaps of people have fast growing "brownies", but it would seem good colour is overall a better indicator, as I havent heard of many people with intense colours and halted growth. Having a reasonable idea of the colour of ions - I'm geussing there's Fe2+ in the mix? Is this your geuss? The thing I find interesting about this product is the rapid change it brings about. Its pretty nuts to think a colour change could occur within a days work, which makes the secret ingredients even more interesting. Weird that acros dont seem to like it as much - so that would lead me to geuss that the chemistry of acros is different to the corals with the intense results. Are there any acro specific sensitivities that people are aware of? What is the purpose of pigment production in corals anyway?

Very cool, although I'm not too keen on the gap above the tank, it seems a little weird to me that all the plumbing ect is perfectly concealed, but you can see the pumps and lighting at the back.
  5. That looks really good - the wood definately makes it a showpeice.

    hello

The person had bought it by the time anyone could have warned them, and even then it would have been up to the seller to decide whether he was going to loose out on $70 by telling the bidder. I'm geussing that you know or are the person who bought these anemones - and it is an unfortunate loss of money. I had never heard of a majano anemone - so it's a mistake I could have made, although it is a good lesson in doing research first. The people here are all very friendly - despite all the bannings . And knowing the way wasp usually answers I doubt he had intended any menace in his post. For instance someone from these forums came round and helped drill my tank last night - at the expense of his own time and effort. (Cheers Tim ) And most of the people here are only too happy to help. Perhaps you could pass on the forum details to the purchaser and hopefully prevent some other future mistakes. (there's plenty to make - everyone here must have done something wrong at some stage)
  7. One thing youd need to watch out for is how far down you make the bottom of the tube - make sure you allow for the water removed in water changes. Also going deeper in the tank say to near the bottom might intice your loaches a little easier?

It might even give them something to grow on???
  9. Hey Fishkeepa, I'm just about ready to put water in my coldwater tank - hopefully getting the holes for the plumbing drilled today. So not long.... My system is a 270L tank with a ~ 100L sump. I managed to get a 400L chiller unused for $450 but I think I was real lucky. I'm setting the whole thing up specifically for an octopus, but will chuck in everything I can find - they should all get along (or get eaten). Chillers are pretty expensive - and as people have said you can go without them, but its just something to be aware of.

Yeah I was surprised with that genetic mutation coment aswell. (not that it would have much effect on the product anyway) E. coli has 4,377 genes. So every division has a 0.4377% chance of mutating, and there are a heck of a lot of divisions going on. It stuck me as a weird/dangerous gaurentee to make. Slappers got any pics of how your tanks going? Might be good for a before /after comparison. (And I want to see your tank )
  11. With cannisters electricity bills arent too much of an issue - from memoery the jebo 819 wiht 1200/lph is only 20W. If I did my calculations right that comes to about $22 for one year of continuous running. Not half bad!

Cheers wasp, I think I was too late in joining the site to see the infamous "zeowars". So I have read practically nothing on the subject. I think it must be said that I learned alot from both you and Layton through your dsb arguments. Have there been controlled experiments with these types of things? I would love to see, say for instance a zeo vrs non zeo tank, (as identical as possible) but unfortunately such tests are not done very often. Same with skimmer comparisons.

Do you keep them in the fridge? If it is a bacterial culture perhaps you could grow your own(might help keep costs down), I wonder what would happen on a bacterial "overdose"? I suppose a mass dieoff for starters.

So whats the idea behing dosing these type things? Are you actually adding bacterial cultures? Or is it nutrients? Is this the idea behind the zeovit method? I get the adding diversity thing but how does bacterial diversity help coral colours - or is this a flow on effect from the better water parameters (due to a higher filtering capacity from the increased bacterial population)?

Awesome colours! Reminds me of wasps tank.

    Vodka advice?

Perhaps the red spectrum light might be playing a part in your algae problems? I was talking to Tm about those same bulbs, and he advised me against them because of their wavelengths and associated agal problems.
  18. I think that the mucus the clowns are covered in mimics those of their host anemone. This means that to the anemone the clown is considered just another arm, so it doesnt fire off the stinging nematocysts. The reason it takes a while to "settle in" is because they have to "learn" how to produce the correct mucus. I'm not sure, but I think they sometimes get stung a few times while this is happening(they have to sample the mucus).
  19. I think they'd be fine as long as they were clean.
  20. I sounds like the tank is pretty much still cycled anyway. Bacteria in filters are supposed to be sweet for at least a couple of hours with no circulation. I personally doubt that <0.25 ammoinia would be a problem. I'd just put the red neons in slowly and watch the params.
  21. Haha I just had a check........ so far deninately banned. Jetskisteve Reef Pies Actually it looks like evilkenevil isnt banned. So all salties.
