Vodka advice?

Featured Replies

Just wondering about the vodka idea? should i give it a go? ive done a google search, but wanted to put it to you guys, see what yas recommend.

Are many people here using it? would it be benificial to my tank?

Ive got a mate who makes his own spirits and he can make me a solution of water and 40 % alcohol would this be ok?

cheers :hail:

Vodka increases bacteria which will help reduce nutrients. However it also increases bad bacteria which could harm your tank if you dont see the signs to reduce it.

I would leave it for more advanced hobbyist.

You could try Bio digest and biotum, both are bacteria based and will not cause any problems.

So far most people have be impressed with the results.

Thanks Reef,

would the Bio digest or biotum help with reducing cyanobacteria? ive been doing weekly water changes, and sucking alot of it out, and it seems to be slowing down now.

what is the bad bacteria, would that be cyano?

Bio digest will reduce cyno. cyno is normally caused by too many nutrients.

what is the bad bacteria,

Bad bactaria will cause fish disease like fungas etc. i noticed that when i pushed the limits of vodka some of my fish got sick.

So what if i used vodka just to help rid the cyno? would that be ok?.

Its just that i can get this mix for free off my mate, its not vodka but alcohol and water, he can make it vodka by adding the flavour, but i kinda thought it wouldnt be needed.

The cyno seems to be slowing down, now that im doing water changes, maybe i should wait, see if i can get rid of it naturally.

Thanks for the advice reef :hail:

I might give it a few more weeks before i try the vodka. Il keep on syphoning the cyno out and doing water changes, it seems to be making a bit of a dent in it :D

I dose one cap daily to 1300ltrnet 1600gross

I have a big bio load

feed the corals weekly

feed the fish twice a day

23 fish

had cyno all gone

Do one big water change nsw once a month

I was ready a letter in practical marine the other day about using brown/raw sugar to do the same thing, anyone tried this? Dosage was 1/4 teaspoon per 100l

Yeah there are supposed to be problems with adding sugar, perhaps with some interaction with the slime coats of fish/some animals. - which are sugar proteins. (dont quote me on that)

If it were the answer the fresh water hobbyists would probably all dose sugar.

One cap is alot Fay, is it ok?

Any signs of STN?

Maybe crackers has a very large bottle :D

I better go and measure it :o

If I was having problems I wouldn't be using it :D
