What are you doing with your old skimmer

I noticed today a company in West Auckland selling white sand from the East coast, would this be any good for aquarium use. Also could you use black sand say from Muriwai beach for a tank.

May I suggest anyone reading the post on tim the supermantis on reef central. Very funny. It was the thread of the month. I would be keen on doing some sort of hunt for them. It might open up the hobby a bit more

This is what it looked like Nearly same colour. I already have a pistol shrimp in the tank I thought the puffers would get him but they just left him alone for some reason.

It wasn't as green as the ones on Reefcentral but more a sandy colour having said that it did change tones I geuss as a response to my self annoying it. When it was in the sand it was more green. I put it in a plastic tub so I could check it out from all angles it definately had the same mouth.

I remember a while ago someone commenting on wether or not mantis shrimp are found in NZ waters cant find the post but anywho. Found one today whilst hunting for crabs and shrimp and snails at the beach for my puffers. Funny looking Acclimated it and then put it in the main tank as I thought he might survive the puffers. Turned my back to get my camera and wham! my blue spotted grouper got em. As his back legs were wriggling I gave him his last rites. So I can say that whoever was looking for them they are down at Little shoal bay.

Okay, Finally got my hands on a Salifert test kit from hollywoods. Tested with the aqua pharm nitrate test kit first. Then tested with the salifert nitrate test kit. Results. Aqua Pharm: 10-15 Salifert: 2.5 Any no why there is a difference. Which one should I believe.

Okay Any suggestions, I only see salifert and aqua pharm at hollywoods.

I have just tested my water and had some inconsitences. Using the aquarium pharmaceuticals nitrate test kit it said I have zero nitrates, which is darn good for fish only. I then decided to retest this result using a near brand new nitrate test kit (only one test done) and it said I have 15. Both test kits are aquarium pharmaceuticals, both used the same water and syringe to extract water, both had, I believe clean test kits (well to the best of my ability). The only difference between the two is they were approximately 7 minutes apart in testing. Could the nitrate level in my test jar have risen from 0 to 15 in 7 minutes. It is a 60 ml shot glass. Any ideas, should I be emailing Mr and Mrs aquarium pharmaceuticals?

Thanks for the name of the plant I am sure once the bubbles settle from my skimmer they will look awesome, but they have kinda taken over my tank. When my corralline comes back will they stop growing so fast. Also my halimeda is growing very fast almost doubled in size in 2 weeks.

150w, luckily seeing as I have only had this fixture for approx 1 1/2 weeks they will replace for free. Also since I have had these obviously my corralline is dying off, but I have getting a mass of other alga trying to take its place, my parameters are all normal it doesnt look like hair algae just string stuff that looks like a green feather. Any ideas?.

Is there any special reason besides heat why you can't touch a halide bulb, one of mine popped and hollywood said make sure to not touch it.

They don't live very long, either they get attacked by other sharks or will die very slowly due to suffocation

Some fish such as GSP (green spotted puffers) spend the younger part of there lives in a brackish environment and then migrate to saltwater.

Day 5: Throttled back to around the 2:30 position or at least I think it is, may be its 2:45 or 2:57. Still microbubbles in the tank. Lowered the collection cup (does that mean it is not far off from being run in) also added a hose to the top collection cup hole to let any bubbles go into a bucket instead of the carpet. So far so good.

Thats awesome. that is a classic example of why I love the fowlr/pred tanks. as a guy said on reef central anyone can kill the fish they just bought, but only certain people have fish that can return the favour

Day 4: Re spakled some areas, after a the overflow overflowed. Still at full throttle. minimal bubbles but still bubbles present.

Reef, Like I said previously if I open the intake all the way the cup overflows. However all keen to have this thing going. Update Day 3 cont: After a bit of spakling with vasoline I have managed to get the skimmer to run full throttle without any leaks, so far. The best thing about that is at full throttle there is only a miniscule amount of microbubbles in the tank not even enough to complain about, pats self on back for pseudo plastering abilities. If you should see carpet or skimmer on trademe tomorrow that will be due to the fact that it exploded and spilt water everywhere

Okay update time Day 3 cont: Check skimmer no overflow, but still alot of bubbles noticed that the level of bubbles is not as high as it was in morning. Opened air intake a little bit more and bubble level has returned. noticed some brownish bubbles in the catchment area possible skimate?

The magical blue sponge is one that I have lying around from other tools for the tank that I am not using, it didn't come with the skimmer.

So is it true about the conditioners in ASW, will I always have bubbles due to ASW or is this a "hey its not my fault its the salts fault" type response

wash the foam you mean sponge? What about the overflow when the air is opened fully.
