  2. Gonna raise whistling tree frog tadpoles! I think they're super cool. Sadly none for sale near me so I'm gonna get them shipped from Greymouth (to Northland). I've got an ecostyle 47, raised tadpoles before but they were green and golden bell frogs. Going to gradually introduce them to my pond when they start getting back legs. Anyone got tips?
  3. Yesterday
  4. A lot of estuarine habitats are degraded nowadays but because they are flushed daily can still offer up a diverse range of flora and fauna especially the closer you get to the sea, keep looking.
  5. A good start carloctopus is here

  7. Hello, I'm a young budding ecologist and I've recently discovered that its legal to keep native freshwater fish. I have just set up a self-sustaining native microfauna aquarium and it is flourishing with potamopyrgus and paratya shrimp. I'm thinking of setting up a native fish aquarium of about 70L and wouldn't mind some advice on that. I live in Oratia, Auckland so does anyone know what lives around here (I've found common bullies, Koura, shrimp but nothing else in Oratia stream)?

  9. When using the calculators, do the calculations include bracing?
  10. I would say this would depend on the behaviors your fish show.

    Leopard Fish

Umm depends where you are they all seem to be top of north island ainthree fish sometimes sells them ( if they are still going) but they are facebook based and will not ship. Sometimes they randomly pop up on trade me
  13. For body and fin rot super clean water and helpful things like tonic salt and Indian almold leaf... but strictly super clean water is the best option. All the best
  14. Please do not put a goldfish in a bowl. One fish is too many and 3, no matter how small, would not last long. A goldfish needs at least 80L of water (pref 120L) plus good filtration and regular maintenance. The first thing your church children would get to discuss, if you put 3 goldfish in a bowl, is whether their goldfish went to heaven. We, as an organisation, do not sell fish. Our members offer when they have some for sale.
  15. How old was he? Bettas have a 2 - 5 year life span and can often be relatively old when they arrive in a pet shop. They will deteriorate quickly when it is old age. This can be mistaken for fin rot or other disease. As there has been a delay in response here, did he survive?

    Leopard Fish

I haven't seen them for quite a few years (but I haven't been specifically looking either) but used to breed them. A lovely fish. Ask at your local pet store, if you have one, if they can get some for you.
  17. I noticed last night that my Betta had a small tear on his fins. I tested my water about 7 days ago an everything was perfect, tested again last night and my ammonia had bounced up. I moved him into a hospital tank within a couple hours an treated with tonic. This morning when I checked him it was way worse, the end of his body was abit patchy and fins more deteriorated. My locals said that there's nothing more I can do at the moment. I'm very worried he won't make it through the night, he's starting to struggle. Any advice is much appreciated.

  22. Karl is in Australia now doing reptile relocations lol
  23. Derek can you get away with just thick sponge as a divider then it can be removed when you want
  24. Make whatever size holes you like and cover them with netting, or a bit of mesh, to stop fry from getting through, if that is what the divider is for. Otherwise, if this is for platy fry, they are quite large so make the holes slightly smaller than the fry. Won't matter if one or two get through as you will be over-run with fry quickly if you save them all. You could also get solid mesh netting that would do the trick or perhaps a metal, or Perspex frame with mesh siliconed or fastened some other way to it. A heavily planted tank (especially with fine leafed plants like water sprite, Indian fern or Java moss) will ensure enough fry survive each month without you ending up with hundreds of fry you don't have space for and can't get rid of and you don't need to build a divider.
