skate
Hi all, I have a 34 L Aqua one tank, I recently did the huge clean up in it, replacing a few plants and having a spring clean. Since I have done that, (I also bumped the temp up a bit because we are all freezing here) I have noticed these little tiny white creatures darting around the stones, mainly near the bottom. Are these good creatures or bad? Are they baby fish? They look like fleas but white!!! The fish are slowly picking them off 1 by 1. I have just been feeding them fish flakes and frozen blood worms as a treat! Im very new at this, my tank is only 7 months old. The big fish are in great shape, nothing to report there. Can anyone enlighten me?
2fishy
do they look more wormlike? or more tadpole like? wat fish have u got in your tank?
jude
What fish do you have in your tank? It might help us to identify whether or not they are baby fish Cheers Jude
skate
Sorry! I have 2 blue rams (my favs), 2 harliquins, 5 glowlites, 1 neon, 2 glass bloodfins, 2 bristlenoses and 2 big fat platys
ryanjury
Maybe baby platties or bristlenoses? Can you post some pics?
skate
I have just tried to get a cpl of pics but they are too small to see. Actually, now that I have a good look the numbers are diminishing fast! The bristlenoses that I have, do look different to one another, but dont seem very friendly toward one another. Not sure if they are same sex or if m or f. The small one has a more pronounced head. The big one very flat.
PENEJANE
any chance that the blue rams spawned? their bubbas are supposed to be pretty small and they normaly spawn down on the gravel to. Just a suggestion though. Hope you find out what it is soon. :bounce:
antwan
i would have to say it would be the platties that have dropped. If you are noticing fry, im sure you would have noticed the eggs and the parents guarding them if it was the blue rams. Also, if it was the rams the parents would be looking after them, they're good parents.
Lucid
I tend to agree with antwan, but i have found and this is personal experiance, that my plattie fry have always headed for the surface, but then i was supplying alot of cover at the top. So all said if you have no plant for them to hide in at the top then it is prob plattie fry. B
skate
I hope it is fry and not something terrible! Being this green its hard to know! I didnt notice any eggs at all prior to my spring clean, so I dont think it is the rams.
jude
My pick is the platies. Mine zip around the bottom like that, despite the fact that there is cover at the top Cheers Jude
Faran
My guess would be cyclops. Small (1-2mm long) and zip across gravel and glass. Never know though, could be anything. If it is cyclops you have nothing to worry about. Consider it free food.
Wok
My pick would be that they are live food for the other fishies
suphew
Male B/N have bristles the females don't. Their babies look just like the parents so are black not white. It is normal for a pair to ignore each other. If they had laid one of them the male from memory, (haven't breed them for a year or so) will disappear and look after the eggs until they hatch. skate
Thanks to all of you! I have had a very long hard look at the tank 1st thing this morning (as you do) and noticed that the numbers of my little wrigglers are dropping as we speak! Its funny though, I thought I had 2 male platties but maybe not!!!!
SpidersWeb
Females have an anal fin, males have their 'manhood' (sorry dont know the proper word off hand). Also common in tanks where food has rested on the bottom are white worms, which wriggle a bit, but dont really swim. Reason I am posting is because in my BB hospital tank I found some little white guys darting around, they are definately not fish, and definately not worms, so tiny I can't get a good look, they're basically little white dots that flick around. Thought there *might* be a possibility these are what you are seeing. I have no idea what they are though. Baby platties look like tiny wee fish. If you put your eye close to the tank you should be able to make out some fish like features like a spine or fins. If its just a white dot you might have what I found yesterday. skate
Hmm, I dont see any fish like features to these wee things. I did a spring clean in the tank, because it was in need of a bit of TLC, so there would have been food resting on the bottom. Having said that, one of my platties keeps offering her/its/his??!! belly to all who swim past her, so maybe it is wee fish.
sharn
SW- these them? http://www.painetworks.com/pages2/hq/hq1321.html theyre mega small, like baby daphnia size i would think (havent seen baby daphnia lol). i have em in my axolotl tank but no others. these dart around in the water column, the V shaped part of the cyclops is the eggs and it looks like they use them to swim. they also rest on the glass sometimes. SpidersWeb
Yeah I'd say thats them. They disappeared over night after I put two small Firemouths and a redspot in the tank, so I imagine somebody had a nice dinner Totally gone this morning, couldn't find a single one. skate
soooooo another nite glued to the tank and one of my platties gave birth to a white sac of some sort, couldnt really get a good look, it got gobbled up by part of the food chain. I figured it must be that?
sharn
SW- these things are mega mega small, perhaps . size. only fry about baby swordtail size would see them as a snack i would think.
