Did you stipulate pairs?

I was at a Tauranga shop that had got in 10 of them, and only two were males.

Each time I go in I offer to take the females for cost plus 10%, but I haven't had a bite yet.

Last time I was there, they still had 6 girls.

Ideal for my breeding scheme, but not for selling to "Joe Public"

Hello 2fishy,

In regards to what tank mates they are compatible with,

I currently have one male who is in a comm tank with 2 spot gourami, numerous swordtails of various sizes(no babies though),SAE's,clown loaches, bronze cories...

They all seem to get on fine. I watch my tanks alot and havnt noticed any adverse behaviour really. If anything he gets slightly hassled by the gourami and large male swordtail, but he dosent seem to be aggressive atall towards his mates.

Ive read that they are amongst the better fish(incl Ottocinclus,SAE) to have in a tank to help keep algae at bay. They will also target areas on plants that have been damaged,(eg a hole created by a bristlenose)

  • 1 month later...

Called in to see 2fishy at Animal Antics today and she had her day off.

Yep, they have JF in there, but only females, didn't see a single male.

Also called into Living Waters, they have a similar problem with their JF but they did have ONE male.

Hurry if you want it though.

They have a good breeders setup of them, five females (I think) and one male.

Cool, Alan what's your opinion on them for their hair algae eating ability? (assuming that's the long thready green hair algae as opposed to black brush)

Yes, they will eat the algae, I can watch mine tear at them.

However if you have a tank full of the stuff they really do not make any difference!

A lot of fish will actually nibble at that. Even bristlenoses and guppies eat a small portion of green hair algae, but never enough to stop it grow.

I've posted this in another thread but if anyone is still watching this thred it could be worth posting here...

I'm interested in getting an american flag fish. Can I keep only one?

If so would it matter if it was male or female?

I could consider adding a second eventually but that would be the limit I think as far as my tank size goes.

If I was to have a pair would a pair of females be better than a pair of males (I'm not interested in breeding them) just don't want any aggression?

Would they be safe with WCMM?

Does anyone know who would have these in chch?

Get two girls then (make the LFS happy)

Thanks Alan with that and a quick chech it appears that I verywell may have 3 Females and 1 male. The black spot is rather to the rear of the dorsal but very obvious now that I look for it on the 3 and the 4th I can't see even a spec on the dorsal.

Will have to try and get some pics up soon.

Carla, it's the same with almost any killie in NZ.

No shops actually specialize in them, but keep a watch on the main ones.

The last I saw were in Living Waters , Tauranga.

Hooking about $12 I think, but all females.

These are one of the species that are imported more often tho, maybe it's because they aren't marketed as "killies" that they are brought in.

I think there was someone up your way that is breeding them.

Check back thru the forum.
