I was using an Eheim 3200lph through a scwd. This combined with head height and bends wasnt giving the water movement that the tank needed. Simple solution upgrade the pump. Buy a new pump. Bugger!! my fittings are 20mm the new pump 25mm. Off to town to buy new piping. Fit new piping and watch the water jet into the tank. Keep watching the tank and see the water flowing over the top. :evil: With the new flow the overflow pipe cant handle the extra. Rush back to town for some bigger piping. Get it all fitted and working well. BUT now the overflow is making gurgling noises. Will have to go to town again tomorrow and get a tap to fit to the overflow pipe to slow it down a bit to give better control of the water level in the overflow. Day 1 wasted. Now tomorrow I can start on setting the new skimmer going. Maybe I should go to town and buy a plumbing shop before I start. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ira Posted May 9, 2006 Report Share Posted May 9, 2006 I have one. Well, it's a PJ5000 which is the pond version, but it's the same just a longer cord and different attachments come with it. Great pump quiet as but I have to reduce the flow into my tank so the sump does not drain. chimera Posted May 9, 2006 Report Share Posted May 9, 2006 thats alot of water tp push through a SCWD have you checked the specs to see if it will handle it?? thats what i was thinking. i gotta dolphin ampmaster for my closed loop, 13,500lph. the pump itself is almost dead silent. its a beast to say the least. the noise that IS generated though is a strong hum from vibrations running through the floor boards!!! and its sitting on two mouse pads :-? There is 3 bends on the imput pipe so this brings the flow down to 4420 lph whilst the SCWD will take 5200. Never thought of a downpipe/durso so will now rush to my tank and reassess things in that line. My sump outlet is 30mm so should be able to do something. chimera Posted May 9, 2006 Report Share Posted May 9, 2006 btw it's input, not imput. interesting, a 32mm overflow hole should be able to handle the flow from the laguna. are you saying the tank overflowed over the top because the water level simply raised 5-10mm or because the overflow could not handle the extra flow? how high from the top of the tank is the overflow/overflow comb? when i increased the piping coming from my return pump (iwaki 55rlt @ about 3 metres head) from 20mm to 25mm, the water level in the tank went up about 7mm. the 32mm outlet still easily handles the flow back down to the sump (pipe size down is 40mm though, still the restriction is the 32mm outlet) i have a formula somewhere showing the maximum flow you can get through different size piping i'll see if i can track it down. Whilst the outlet hole from the sump is 30mm, with the piping that was on it, it was reduced to 19mm. this was how I got the tank originally. My biggest worry is that the overflow is only 25mm from the top of the tank which means the water level is only 20mm from the top.
