evilknieval69
hello I sat and watched my fish for about half an hour this morning and all seemed fine. i went out for about 4 1/2 hours and came back to a dead female apistorgramma cacatoides (cockatoo cichlid) in the tank she was in there is, 1 pair cockatoos, 1 pair blue rams and 1 pair bristlenoses. now i only have my male cockatoo left!! she was doubled over on the bottom, i took her out and stuck her into a little bowl so i could examine her and i noticed that her mouth area had alot of red on/around it which is not normally there. she also had a pinky looking "bubble thing" coming out just behind her anal fin...her bottom. it wasnt a worm it looked like her guts were coming out. they looked a little bit "wierd" this morning but not anything to worry about. just fish behaviour really. she is quite a dominant little girl, pushing the rams around if she wants too and they are bigger than her... could the male or the rams have atacked her?? i dont think so because the other fish are not looking good now. im thinking it could be internal parasites. what do i treat with??? thankyou in advance **EVIL**
ryanjury
Hi, Sorry to hear about your fish it sucks to loose them... From what you describe nothing pops up to me.. I would have thought if internal parasites had got her you would have noticed over the last few days that she just wasn't doing too well.. I have kept and bred cockatoo's and rams in the same community tank and they chased each other around a bit but never did any damage, you male could have been at fault my big male is 3 or 4 times the size of any of my females and he is pretty nasty but the girls always manage to get out of his way when hes in a mood and hide no damage done.. Mind you they get a whole 3 foot tank the themselves now so they have alot of room to avoid him.. Hopefully someone else can help you with what happened to her and also the best way to treat for internal parasites (im also wondering this as I was thinking of doing it just in case)... Warren
Sounds like the male killed her to me. Dwarf cichlids are generally quite aggressive, especially at breeding time. The male may have been all go and if the female didn't want to play, dead female. Fish can get away with it...
evilknieval69
so why are the other fish not looking good. the blue rams and the male cockatoo hav all lost their colour. she cant have affected the water being dead and all because she musnt of been dead long. a few days ago they didnt look very good so i kept an eye on them and they went back to normal i just dont want the others to die thanks **EVIL**
Caryl
Do some water tests for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

sharn
theres a special word for when their intestines come out their bottoms, its escaped me now but seen a few people with axolotls that have had it. maybe it was that? id check your water, maybe your nitrates are too high? when was your last water change and did you use aged water? id say its either some sort of illness or bad water, have you added anything new to the tank recently that could have bought anything in? some water changes with aged water may help. the only other thing i can think of is your getting ph swings like i used to, got any calciferous stuff in there? Caper
Sorry about your fishy...perphaps some regular, small water changes could help?
BK
50% water change to start with. May be repeat the next couple of days apart from high nitrates may be male was a bit rough. Take some water in to your LFS and ask them to test it for you if they don't start shopping at another.
