Whiteworms

hello again

i have just got some whiteworms (thanks to Wok). i have them in an ice-cream container with some small holes in the bottom for a bit of drainage and bigger holes in the top for aeration. they are in a mixture of potting mix("just" potting mix from the Warehouse)and soil from the garden. i am going to feed them bread crumbs.

i am going to be getting another starter culture in another week from "another" person and i was thinking that i could keep them in a different way to find out whats 'best'.

i was wondering if people could tell me their ways of keeping whiteworms(what substrate, food, container, conditions etc.)

i am just wanting lots of different ways of doing it so i know what has worked and what hasnt so i can get a good culture up and running.

hopefully in about a month i will have thriving cultures of WW's to feed my fish and maybe even enough to start others off!!!!

thanks

It is best if you can lay your hands on a polystyrene bin and Compost

(Potting mix contains fertilizer which is not a good idea)

half fill the container with potting mix and add water untill it is moist.

add your white worms and then cover.

Oh add a small piece of bread soaked in water or milk (enough for the worms to eat up in a couple of days.

With the amount of worms I have given you I would say about 1/8 of a slice of bread.

Store in a cool dark place.

In no time you will have lots of white worms to feed your fishes

I feed mine on luncheon, cut into 5 -10mm cubes and scattered over the surface.

To feed, just pick up a cube and put into a worm feeder.

When the worms have been eaten the cube is returned to be consumed by the worms.

I use a washing machine bowl.

On the southern side of the house outside.

I have a number of wooden boxes I have made with sliding opaque plastic lids. I line the box with plastic to keep the moist media off the wood so the boxes don't self destruct. I use potting mix from pots were the mix has expired and needs replacing. I feed on sliced luncheon. I think you want a relatively neutral media so they feed on what you add rather than the media and they definately do best in cool conditions, and they are photophobic so you need to exclude all light.

I go along with alanmin. Wooden box work best, must let the air in better or something. Have tried icecream container but not as good. I use peat which has been in my filter. Just about to start one off in a box I made 24"x8"x8".
