JoandWilly
Just to add a few different thoughts...you are dosing vodka to put into your tank as much unadulterated alcohol as possible. You CAN'T smell alcohol! You immediately think cops and breath test - you can smell the OTHER bits of the liquor remaining in the mouth/throat not the alcohol! Which is why we have to get the most pure vodka we can get. So what are you smelling in your tank - the additives in the vodka or something your tank is generating? :-? Lol this made me crack up laughing, have you every smelled pure ethanol, it smells exactly like vodka and just about every other strong alcoholic drink. lol So infact you CAN smell alcohol, except when you start getting up to the larger molecule ones with longer carbon chains as they dont change to a gas as readily. beachy
Yep, i have an alcohol water mix off my mate, he stills his own, and i can smell the alcohol in my tank after a dose.
shaneo
so is it the alcohol that does the trick with algae? or the vodka essence?
wasp
The alcohol. But you can't stick any old booze in your tank! The process used to make vodka ensures it is relatively contaminant free, plus it has the right alcohol most others don't.
Feelers
You can smell ethanol - but I dont think to the point that it would be obvious on someones breath, its a very loose watery smell. Its not possible to smell it with your nose very far away from the bottle - I dont think the small amounts you are adding could cause that. There are some (although very few) cheap ass vodkas that have glucose in them - just make sure its not listed in the ingrediants. Kristov 63 would be a good cheap one to use- ahhh back in the day where we got it for 8 dollars a bottle. Vodka essence is a bit of a ruse - normally its liquid glucose to act as a smoothing agent - because pure alcohol(or in many cases poorly distilled alcohol) is harsh to drink. There should be nothing else in the bottle. With vodka its just one chemical and water - with anything else there are all sorts of flavours added, which are all organics which you cant tell what will happen other than probably being bad. Most alcohols are high in sugars - fruit essences and long hydrocarbons, which wouldnt be good.
