whats happening with killies?

I have golden australe laying eggs but they are only a couple of months old. I have an older male (from shiu) which is driving four females. I tried the chocolates but only got a couple of eggs even though the females are bigger than the golds. Given a bit of time, I hope we will be away again after many years off. They are nice looking fish but realy still a bit young.

I can't get too carried away yet as I still haven't built the killi tanks. Hope to try some nothos when I get better set up.

Gidday Fellow Kool Killie Keepers,

This is what im breeding:

Australe choc ( 20+ )

Korthausae Yellow ( 20+ )

Gold Guntheri ( on peat and thanks to the member who gave them to me)

Bitaeniatum ( experimenting )

Golden wonders

Gardneri Albino ( 50+ )

Gardneri Nigeriatum Gold ( 100+ )

Sjoestedti ( a few :-))

Dageti ( 10+)

I think thats it. Thanks to Alan showing/making me 10+ tanks, I now have a bedroom thats like living under the Niagra falls!! Easy to get to sleep though. Mind you, I work 11 hours and then come home and work another 5 hours on killies so there isnt much time for sleep!!!!

Hi,

As it happens Im going to be shifting soon and need to decrease my killie numbers until I build my new fish room.

If you can get a few people down there interested in a quantity of them im prepaired to make it worth your while.

And if anyone in Auckland wants some then let me know.

Tim

Marty, have you got any of those Lagos coloured up yet??

What ratio of gender did you get??

Mine are just starting to colour up, they need to go into an observation tank to ascertain their ratio.

Same with the Striatum.

Did I say that my first P82 babies have themselves now got babies??

Went well for the first few days of spawning then stopped!!

Stopped completely.

Almost ready to put down the peat that I have the SJO's on.

Eyes are gazing up at me, begging, begging.

Put down 38 eggs, have removed four that fungused, so hopefully will score just over 30.

The ones I have water incubated appear to hatch with some problems of getting out of the egg shell, even going to the stage of having to blast them out using my pipette, and then stay on the bottom of the tank for two weeks or so, before swimming or dieing.

I think that the hatch will be better for the peat hatchers, than the water hatchers.

Here's hoping.

Hi All.

I keep looking for new posts as to what is happening with "Killies" but I dont appear to be able to see anything new on a daily basis.

I would like to think that there is enough interest in the species to have a post at least every other day.

The forums keep the interest of the enthusiasts up and also the general hobbyists.

my juniors are growing and some are starting to colour up..

I don't know if the readers of this thread know but the NZKA are having their AGM at easter.

We may get some more news about that soon hopefully.

Don't forget that there is a competion with our super display stand being used by us for the first time in ages.

Some may remember it when Napier had the National Fishshow at the Seahorse Farm.

So if you are contemplating entering any, start preparing them for their show day now by keeping them in a small tank and feeding a little and often to encourage them to come to the front and display when ever someone approaches their tank.

That hopefully will be the judge, The Mr Jonhn Sutton NZKA #1, coming up from Nelson for the show.

Maybe if you southerners were to get in touch with him, if he has spare seats, you could share the costs.

Thanks for that Caryl.

The tanks have micro tubes for aeration, there is no filtration, so more regular water changes are needed.

The heating is done by undertank heating, and as all the tanks are the same size, as long as the water amount is the same, only one thermostat pershelf, or heatpad is needed.

I think we have two pads on each shelf, so that gives us 6 thermostats.

All tanks are illuminated evenly as per judging standards, using flourescent tubes.

The heat can be conserved when the viewing is not required or at night, by a front cover.

Entrants will often supply their own water from home so as the fish don't have to go thru a water parameter change, and they will often tape down the lids so as there is no interfernce with their charges and they aren't found on the floor.

There is a small covering of gravel on the bottom of the tanks to stop the fish from being scared by weird reflections and light of the base. Sometimes the fish having been brought along in such good condition can be seen spawning in the gravel, this of course can be later used to get more babies of possibly the choicest killifish in NZ.

Hi All

Thanks for the posts.

It is good to see that (maybe it's just the stalwarts of NZKA that are posting) there is someone out there that has taken some of their time to make the post.

The NZKA is I fear short on numbers but a post every few days should encourage others to get off their butts and take an interest in their fellow members.

Thanks for the infromation re; the AGM Alan and the pics of the Napier show Caryl.

Good luck.
