Sayhi2steve
Hi Ira. Thanks for the reply but you never did say where you got it from...
Ira
Sorry, Twiglands in Upper Hutt. He doesn't have any anymore, I bought the last of what he had ages ago and he said he's not going to get it anymore because his supplier will only sell it by the ton. (Or maybe tonne?) Pegasus
Hi Sayhi2steve, Any local gravel yard or quarry that supplies materials for the roads should have what you are looking for. That's where I get all my gravel from, and I use 3mm to 4mm, but they have it much finer... Costs around 34 bucks a tonne ... if you need that much, but they will sell you a sack or a trailer load... no probs
Sayhi2steve
Thanks Pegasus Is the gravel smooth as alot of the stuff they use is quite sharp isnt it??? I want it for african cichlids who as you know like to do a bit of the digging and also catch food in it so do want anything they will hurt themselves on. Warren
Try Southland Sand and Gravel in Invercargill. They have graded colours and sizes. If they cannot sell you the amount you need directly, they will tell you their nearest reseller.

Sayhi2steve
Oh O.K Well now I know it won't annoy me anymore. Thanks again for the tip on gravel. By the way the plant tank you helped me with is growing really well and all the fish seem to be happy the kribs have even spawned. The Cabomba, well thats what I think it is is doulbling in height every few days have had to cut it down three times in three weeks.
Pegasus
Hi Sayhi2steve Not had any probs with sharp edges, and I have heaps of cats grubbing about inthe gravel with no ill effects.. (they wear their barbles down if its sharp) The stuff I'm using is called #6, and it also hasn't effected my pH either.
peety
I use gravel too but added some normal aquarium stone to reduce the sharp edges not for the fish, but because they cut the roots of new plants. The fish seem smart enough not to get cut, the plants had to rely on me being careful.... hence a lot of dead plants...
Warren
Hi Bill, I see from a previous post you are getting your gravel from someone who supplies roading chip. They of course crush the gravel/stones to create sharp edges so your car tyres better grip the road. I bet most of you didn't know that the main reason for resealing a road is to put sharp road chip down as it gets blunt from all the cars. Can you get the gravel from them before it is crushed? What colours does it come in or is it only grey? The price is really good. The stuff I've been getting is from Southland Sand and Gravel. It is round stones graded to between 2-4mm. They blend 7 different coloured stones together to make a very attractive dark sand. It costs $75 per tonne but $580 per tonne in freight to get it to Napier by sea (the cheapest option). It is the best looking sand/gravel I've seen in the country to date. They also supply most of the non-marble/orange coloured retail aquarium sand throughout the country too. This blend I'm talking about (Oreti Rock) is available in some pet shops for approx $38 for 10kg. That works out at $3800 per tonne. Thats because it first goes in bulk to the wholesaler who bags it and sells it on to the retailer... So the $655 purchase price soon gets marked up somewhat. I needed 500kg for my 8' tank and 250kg for my 6'. I used up the rest in the fishroom. Southland Sand and Gravel has many different sizes and colour of gravel and sand. Pegasus
Can you get the gravel from them before it is crushed? What colours does it come in or is it only grey? I suppose so.. but uncrushed woulsd obviously be bigger I only looked for dark grey, but I think they do shingle and pebbles as well. It's Altlas Quarries in Northland. Bilbo
I know this is an old post but for those who are interested. 'The Good Shed' in NaeNae, Wellington is a supplier for Southland Sand and Gravel. They can get all the colours and sizes if they havent got them in stock. Price is roughly $25 per 25Kg bag I think.
