ralphie
Hey guys, I need some guidelines on breeding my goldfish. I know they have breed before in a pond as I have seen the small ones but I have had to move them to a tank as I moved house. Is there any way I can promote breeding in my goldfish? alanmin4304
If they are well conditioned and the female is ripe with eggs give them a water change and raise the temperature a few degrees.
shiuh
are goldfish easy to breed? i heard they can have up to 500 eggs with one spawn.
x matt x
Put spawning mats or plants in the tank for the female to lay the eggs on and as alanmin4304 said condition them with lots of live food, give them freshwater and raise the temperature about 2 degrees. Once the fish have spawned remove the eggs and put them in a shallow container/tank (about 10cm deep) with water from the spawning tank at the same temp. When the fry have consumed there yolk feed them infusoria, baby brine shrimp, daphnia then after about a week start feeding them finely powdered flake food. KEEP THE WATER CLEAN. Aquagold
Goldfish can spawn a couple of thousand eggs. All dependent of size of breeders. I've had spawnings of 6000 and more. The hardest part is growing the numbers and grading out the reject fish. The internet is full of info.
shiuh
6000????
Aquagold
That was from large comets and not just a single fish. Pauas I've spawned have had an estimated 2-3,000,000 eggs. The problems start when you have to feed all those hungry mouths... just like my children... Most broadcast spawners will have large batches... survival of the fittest. alanmin4304
If you spawn a pair of goldfish in a bare tank the site is pretty impressive. there can be a looooot of eggs.
Faran
My recommendation for spawning egg broadcasters/scatterers - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 230064.htm Seller has 4 different types of "plant" mats. One looks very much like, er... hemp and I honestly had the best results with it out of the four. Just be sure and remove parents asap as they can get under/between and eat eggs. craig
don't forget to put some formulin or aquaflavin in with eggs,to stop the eggs from fuzzing up/fungi. 20L tank water,20L freshwater 80mls formulin, not sure the ammount of aquaflavin to use. craig
i forgot, you must run air-lines.
ralphie
Thanks for all the help!!! Air-Lines? excuse my ignorance but is this a filter? By that i take it the eggs need some air system?
sharn
i think he might mean airpumps? you attach airline to them and put a diffuser on the end (air stone). put the air stone in the tank and voila lots of teeny bubbles helping to keep the water airated (and the eggs with fresh oxygen) you can get sponge filters too for fry/egg tanks, theyre not harsh enough normally to suck anything into them and keep the water just that little bit clearer. with some fish you will see them fanning the eggs, its to supply them with fresh oxygenated water. goldfish dont look after their young so you will need to try keep them oygenated yourself. (note- sharn doesnt know much about breeding fish whose parents dont look after the young so if any info is incorrect im sure it will be corrected soon enough )
