reef
Testing out a new beckett skimmer as was interested to see if the hype match the performance . The quality of the skimmer is excellent but So far 4 days of skimming has produced little. still soon as it can take a few weeks to build up the slim coat inside the skimmer, One thing i noticed about the beckett skimmer is that the bubble side is large and nowhere as small as a needle wheel skimmer. will maybe test for a month and then put a Deltec in to see how much it pulls out. Will get some pics soon. Thought i start it again as the thread was ruined by some losers. So far day 5 small bit of skimming. also added a Small deltec to see how it skims Bubble size in the beckett still quite large compared to the Deltec. Ira
I've heard several times people claiming that becketts produce smaller bubbles than needlewheels?
ghostface
shall we just let reef post the results this time instead of snarking? just an idea....

slappers
OK my Deltec AP702 is going really well, been running for about 5 to 6 weeks now IMO it seems to mature like the older the Deltec gets the more thicker skimmate gets

Hi reef, not too sure where you got your beckett skimmer from (since you are not willing to disclose), but I suggest that you check with the manufacturer on how to tune the air intake to get the suitable bubble size for optimal skimming. Beckett skimmers are not plug and play skimmers, it requires tuning. Ferrari won't win F1 if a 18year old new driver races it. 8) I believe most of us reading your thread would really love to see some pictures rather than the usual sentence "Bubble size in the beckett still quite large compared to the Deltec". Sincerely hope that you can spare some time to snap a few shots of its performance.
reef
Yes i will post some pics when it starts to skim. if youy like i can post some pics now of it skimmiing nothing. i am waiting for optimal performance. maybe there is nothing to skim as the second skimmer i put in is not skimming much. but I suggest that you check with the manufacturer on how to tune the air intake to get the suitable bubble size for optimal skimming. I thought that would be pretty obvious that you had to adjust the airflow. for optimal skimming , the same goes for any skimmer. Airflow to water ratio has to be balanced so you get smaller bubbles and better skimming.
Feelers
I think when I get my new skimmer I'm gonna have a skimmer face off. I was thinking about just using a tank that has had a few eggs chucked in and left for a while.
Brianemone
that is nasty feelers.

Brianemone
i will officially be able to start a review of my skimmer tommorow. from what i have noted so far goes as per what reef said, it appears to be constructed very well and made out of top quality parts. i will be using a resun MD40 on mine so i expect it to work optimally with this pump
reef
will have to move to another tank. still wont skim. will move to a high load tank this week when i get time.

Brianemone
first impressions are as follows the noise i was expecting it to create was alot more than it is in reality. there is a bit of a wirl and hum from the pump but that dissapears once the door is on the cabinet. as wasp mentioned it is very turbulent in the reaction chamber, alot of bubbles and already a head of foam has formed at the top. the bubbles size varies abit, most really small (1mm or less) and there are a few bigger ones bouncing around (the turbulance part) over the next few days ill have the opertunity to dail it in and get it skimming the way i want it to. pics tonight (not that there is much to see, as soon as i turned it on the collection cup and the waste collector all steamed up
Brianemone
heres a pic of teh backet setup in the cabinet, just fits in, in hind sight i should have made the stand a little higher (not just for the skimmer but for everything)
Brianemone
on the right hand side at the back you can just make out the pump (resun md55) and the skimmate goes down the tube into the waste collector. the waste collector is a genius little peice of equipment. it holds more than a normal collection cup which is nice also when it fills the pingpong ball in it raises and blocks any air from escaping, this in turn stops the skimmer from working the water level drops right down so no fear of overflowing. well worth the extra few dollars for peice of mind and the buffer between having to dump out the skimmate. since teh skimmer started working properly at about 930 last night its pulled out about 250ml or skimmate, this skimmate is more towards the consistancy that i expected. its still breaking in so im expecting good things. jetskisteve
That collection cup would make people lazy, skimmers are more efficient if the cup & neck is cleaned more regularly IMO
ocean werx
That collection cup would make people lazy, skimmers are more efficient if the cup & neck is cleaned more regularly IMO Dear Mr jetskisteve, I couldn't agree more. Thank you for pointing that out. For skimmers to work optimally, the cup and neck should be cleaned regularly. This is exactly the same recommendation that we advise all our customers. The auto shut off waste collector serve mainly as a flood-preventor. At times, skimmers might craze. eg: change of filter media, topping fresh water that contains dechlorinator, water changes, etc. An auto shut off waste collector really comes in handy in times like that. Brianemone
yip no doubt about that, its just a nice thing to have incase one day your not thinking about skimmate and forget to empty it. i cont comment on the maintanence required on the beckett yet but apparently the neck needs need to be cleaned more often than needle wheels but i would have thought it would be the same. jetskisteve
Hey Mr Evil I agree totally as long as they dont get slack its a great idea even my new AP902's have the drain tap on the cup but i wouldnt use it myself as i know i'd get a bit complacent.
