I need to replace some fluorescence tubes and I'm wondering what I should replace them with. Standard Aquarium tubes, Marine Tubes or your standard "Cool Whites" the tank is 1.0m deep and contains Discus and is planted so need the brightest available. What is the difference Marine and Standard? What are Grow lux tubes that they sell at Hydroponics shops??

The name manifacturs (gezz my spellings crap today) ius a bit meaning less. You wanta look for a tude thats 6500K or higher, as the number goes up they get bluer, so it just depends on your tastes. Most electric wholesalers have 6500k (k=kelvin) in stock for about $10, these are often called 'daylight' tubes.

Marine tubes tend to be 10,000K or higher, if they are white, or there is a blus tube used which is no good for you.

I have used grow lux tubes, work but wouldnt bother again they are too red

Go to lamp specialists 10 Stevens Street by Jade stadium. I got a 4ft light and two tubes for about the same price as a growlux in the pet shop. I use a growlux type in the front and natural white in the back--- seems to be a good combination for plant growth. They only take cash,no eftpos etc. The growlux also brings out red and blue in neons etc thats why I put it in the front

My fluoros are common 'bright white' or 'daylight tubes'. I get them from Mastertrade.

Gro-lux are specifically for plants. Great if you want tons of algae too  . They were all the rage in aquariums about 15 years ago (really show up the blues and reds in fish) until people also realised that, although they were excellent for plant growth, the algae took off even faster.

I find the combination works well but you have to go a bit easy on the light until the plant is well established. The plant and the algae like the same stuff as they are both plants but when the plant is established it seems to beat the algae to the nutrient. At present I have two 3 footers on a 600mm tank going 15 hours a day and the plants are loving it with no algae problems.
