chimera
i hope you dont mean cutting food costs on the weekly supermarket bill try huhu grubs they're high in protein and free - get enough of them to feed the whole family
livebearer_breeder
There alright aslong as they've been starved for a day or two, i can't eat them straight out of the wood work. Satay them with a bit of peanut sauce and there yum. I personally dont like white worms though, but my fish love it, and there perfect for conditioning for breeding etc etc so i was asking about them...... Wok
Livebearer Breeder. I just use the compost from The Warehouse. It is currently on special at $9 for 3 bags of the stuff and it doesn't contain any fertilizer. I use it in my 3 boxes of white worms with no ill effects either with the worms or with my fish that I feed them to. Just add a little bit more water to make sure that the compost is moist and cool. livebearer_breeder
Its like a barky mulch though? and you dont have any contamination? Shae
Wok
not barky at all.. maybe the odd small bit but otherwise it is like potting mix. have had no trouble with it at all (Yet....*touch wood*) No contamination as yet... and I haven't got legionaires either

alanmin4304
I use the potting mix from expired potplants that need repotting. I am told the peat from aquarium filters is also very good, but I can't confirm as I don't use it. I have made boxes with sliding opaque plastic lids, about 400mm x 200mm x 200mm and feed them on luncheon.
alanmin4304
I think you need an inert media so they have to come to the top for food rather than feeding on the media.
livebearer_breeder
Might mix in some peat then, bought in bulk when i was breeding killies, Cheers for that Shae
alanmin4304
I tried plastic contaiers but they climbed all over the place. I found a wooden box is best but if you line the area in contact with the moist media the box will not commit suicide so quickly. The worms do better if quite moist but not wet, and cool. alanmin4304
Straight peat may be too acid, I don't know. I know a guy who used to collect the peat from filters which would be a bit less severe I would think.
Oscar
Do you have to clean off the compost before feeding them to the Fish? Does anyone have some White Worms so I can get some going or were do you get them?
alanmin4304
You put a piece of glass on the top and the food under it. You lift the glass and there is a ring of clean worms around the food that you can pick up with your fingers. They are photophobic and retreat into the compost when you let the light in and they take a few hours to fully come back
