Brianemone
what is the best way to do bracin to avoid light blocks and allow easy access to all areas of the tank???
Ira
Something like Pies' metal rod bracing should work. And the little rim normally around the edges doesn't really get in the way.
Brianemone
i did think about pies version but im not sure if im going to have a collar or lid at the moment so i dont really want something the comes down on the out side of the tank
reef
how big is your tank.?? you should get away by having 50mm bracing at the ends and a 100mm center brace.
Brianemone
1200x700x500 (500 tall may turn to 600)
reef
why not get 10mm glass, 30 mm wide bracing going around the top of the tank, then you wont need any bracing in the centre, only 30mm bracing will be on the sides and the front and the back of the tank,
Brianemone
that does sound good as i would prefer to have nothing in the middle if possible. any question about strength?
misnoma
I have a 10mm 1200x600x600 tank, has 150mm end braces, and a 100mm center brace, along with 50mm braces lengthwise on the top. That was how Greg (tanks2u) specced/built it - not sure if you could have less, or if I would want less (I'm paranoid )
Brianemone
thats sounds a little overkill to be honest i would find that much bracing quite frustrting, i would much rather prefer the stainless brace to that
reef
the strengh will be fine as long as you get 10mm glass and 10mm bracing,
klaymann
10mm glass still bows if only using mid brace for support , even in a 4ft tank. for a 6/10ft think of the loading on the top rim surround braces without a center.brace or two. .. see that most tanks 6-8 ft use two halide units .. whats the prob with one centre brace placed between the lighting .. "peace of mind tank keeping".. 8) ... no tank blowouts 5 years down the track :-? 8) ...working with aquatics have seen sum "lovely :-? " tank blow outs and can only say " didn't want to be infront when that went!! ... but we all have our own opinions
Pies
6-8 ft use two halide units 6-8 foot tanks are likley to have between 4-6, not 2. 2 on a 2-4 footer. Chimera has 3 on his 5 footer, Reef 4 on his 8 footer, me with 5 on my 7 footer Center braces are nessessary, even in 12mm glass, the glass bows. Take the hit and use glass if you must, I opted for my SS system, couldn't be happier. Pie
reef
perimeter bracing (euro bracing is fine for a 4ft tank) Yes, it is the bracing that is used around the top of the tank. No center brace is used, it is called "Euro bracing". More popular over seas, but makes access to the tank easier.
klaymann
metal bacing isn't required on 4 tanks (unless 750-900 high.).. when dealing with large tanks we always had metal outer bracing with centre braces on anything from 6 ft to 2.7 mtr with heights of 650 - 750mm( one scary thing is after the tanks are filled ( 2 mtr plus ones) even with multi centre+rim/metal bracing there was always a slight bulging of the glass and slight gapping of the metal braces at the ends of the tanks .. never ran a straight edge over the front , but I bet some of you will after reading this post ... food for thought 8) 8) 8) .
