wasp
Actually there IS one thing wrong with your sump! No calcium reactor in it! Runs and hides

cookie extreme
(Who needs 'em)!! you will, if you want to be successful in growing SPS. light alone just doesn't quite cut it.
JoeBlog
you will, if you want to be successful in growing SPS. light alone just doesn't quite cut it. If you run a proper bare bottom system, you might not have to run a calcium reactor even with a reasonably stocked SPS tank. Quite a few of the BB guys on RC don't. You can easily keep up with the tank's demands with simple two part additives.
cookie extreme
You can easily keep up with the tank's demands with simple two part additives. true, but the larger the tank the higher the cost and the end heavy well growing SPS tank will cost you a small fortune (mine over $48 plus a month when i upgraded, don't want how much it would cost me nowadays, also the levels stay more constant)
wasp
To me, having a ca reactor, is all about less work, and more importantly, total stability in the tank, unlike the swings that have to happen using a 2 part additive.
lduncan
Two part will be less expensive than a calcium reactor if your purchasing food grade chemicals rather than retail commercial additives. Two part does need to be on dosing pumps for high demand tanks to keep levels stable. It's no more unstable than a calcium reactor. And unlike a calcium reactor, you can actually calculate (without experimentation) how much needs to be dosed over the day. On the plus side, no chance of adding unnecessary phosphate, or worrying about suppressed pH.
wasp
I used food grade additives before going ca reactor, cheap enough, but other than the initial set up cost for the reactor, the reactor wins hands down. Another thing I noticed is the pumps now go longer between needing cleaning, less precipitation then I had using 2 part, probably because of the way it's dosed. Having tried both, I just wouldn't go back. My corals have responded positively also, that's important to me.
reef
Two part additive or calcium supplement is all that is required in a non sps tank as calcium requirement will be far lower than a pure sps tank. Calcium reactors are not the be end all as they can have problems like adding co2 to the water . I have found that I still have to add buffer and calcium supplement on occasions to keep the level up.
