bart687
Can somebody help me here as I have been told to put a bit of rock salt into my tanks that contain Discus, Angels,Neons, suckerfish, e.t.c This came from a guy that runs his own busness in Nelson and imports Tropical fish. Has anybody tried this before? and how has it gone.
dee_jay_01
Hi. Rock salt is good to put in to your tank every so often, but becareful as some fish will react baddly to it. Most neons, Live Bearers, and Tetras. enjoy a bit of salt in their water, not sure about Discus and Angels though. Rock or Sea Salt is a useful additive if you have any fungul or parasitic problems in your tank or on your fish. If I can remember corectly it is around 1 tablespoons per litre of water but I would only use about half that dose every month or two. We have used it to help treat White Spot on my Glass Bloodfin Tetras and Clown Loaches and it did help, but i also used a half dose of a White Spot specified chemical as well as increasing my temperature to 30 degrees, as I have some scaleless fish in my tank aswell. Anyways your tetras should love it, but keep asking around your LFS they should let you know for sure.
Faran
1 level teaspoon to every gallon (4.5 litres) is advised for taking care of skin and fin problems.... from elsewhere on these forums. That's for discus, as well. I'm doing this with my tank this evening and will let you know how it goes.

This level would be heading towards being a Brackish Tank. As a tonic.. (if required).. just use around a tablespoon to every couple of gallons (imp).. (9 to 10ltrs) Bill. Newtman
i use rock salt in most tanks, generally just a bit erery once in a while, or if theres sick fish, and also a bit if im setting up a new tank. mollies, guppys, plattys, sourds and some cichlids all like a bit in there water,in the wild minarals and salts would all ready be in there waters anyway.. mustcooktea
Are there any fish that don't tolerate salt in the tank?
dee_jay_01
sorry all I ment 1 teaspoon per gal, I'm quite sick at the moment and I have alot of things running through my head. Scaleless Fish do dont like salt that much, well thats what the net says about black Ghost Knife fish and I have 2 of them and I also had a Elephant Nose fish and they also are scaleless. discus haven
Hi, not sure on the other fish but Discus will tolerate salt at a level of 1 tablespoon to 5 gallons and possibly more. I use salt with my discus in bare bottom tanks for some ailments at this dosage. Hope this helps.
BK
He dosen't import only buys from a importer, Brooklands I think. Good to see you ask on here about info you have been told as a lot of people have different ideas. I add a little salt to all my tanks(Discus,Tetras,Guppies). He has 3 small Discus in 3 different tanks and when I pointed out that they are better keep in group he wouldn't listen. Best to ask on here
