Ira
So, my ugly semi permanent short term fix spray bar had spontaneously decided it doesn't want to sit nicely in the tank and wanted to rotate a little so it's splashing a bit. I was trying to twist it and get it to stay spraying underwater and it wouldn't stay. Thought maybe if I adjusted the pump(It's attached by a couple feet of hose) maybe it would hold the spraybar right. So I fiddle with the pump, twist the hose a bit and *POP*FOOOSH*CLICK* I'm soaked head to toe on my left side and the RCD has tripped knocking out the whole tank's power because something got wet. So, I spend about 15 minutes carefully drying everything off(Doesn't seem to have gotten water into the power strip and turn the RCD back on *FOOOSH*CLICK* #*$%it, I forgot to put the hose back onto the pump! So, another 15 minutes later and nervously resetting the RCD AFTER reconnecting the hose and everything's running again. Then I was movign a leather about 10 minutes before I had to leave for work and got a finger full of bristleworm bristles and spent 15 minutes pulling them out with a tweezer. Anyway...What should I use to hold the stupid hose on? I don't want to use a steel hose clamp but I can't find anything plastic that big. What's everyone else use? I just have it forced onto the outlet of the pump and a cable tie around it which probably does absolutely no good.
angelfish
OH NO! reminds me of when i was setting up my tank with no plumbing experience at all. ' i dont need plumbers glue! the pipes stay together niciely!!!' anyway, dont really know what you could use to hold your spray bar still. good luck finding something though. Pies
I used to have this problem a lot with my old tank. My advice would be to replace the speay bar with something purpose made from glued pressure pipe with a screw fitting and a hansen bayonet fitting at the end. Might cost $20-30 but at least you will sleep easy. Also good work on the RCD, goes to show they are worth the money. You will never know if it would have caused a much bigger problem, electricuted you or caused a fire or even distroyed some expensive pump or ballast or something. Ira
The spray bar was purpose made...Only intended to be used until I bought a sea swirl. That's been what? A year now? Hehe. If it was sitting where I made it for originally it'd be fine, but because my anemone decided it wants to sit directly under it I've shoved it to the side. Of course, I stupidly made the spray bar with an extra 90° bend so it's sticking out from the back a few inches, if it was flat up against the back it wouldn't be shading anything. Any suggestions on how to hold the hose on the pump? It's not threaded or anything. Would a stainless steel(I think most are, aren't they?) hoseclamp be ok? Pies
What is the pump? If its a Ehiem they have a threaded in/out. so you can remove the ehiem fitting and fix a normal pressure pipe fitting, then use a glued/threaded hansen bayonet fixing. If its not an Ehiem, go get one pie
Ira
It's a Laguna PJ5000. I don't think there are any eheims with a similar amount of flow.
westy1
Gidday Ira,if you are unable to change it as pies suggested,i have some black plastic 38mm alligator hose clips you are welcome to.Found them in a central auckland shop ages ago so bought heaps, they fit easily over the largest(34mm)eheim hose used on 1" pump intake, should fit the 1.25 outlet also.I have the 32mm clips also, so if anyone needs these let me know ,gratis
Ira
Thanks, Westy. I bought a stainless steel hose clamp today. So we'll see how it goes. If it starts rusting or anything I'll let you know.
Pies
If it starts rusting? Isn't thata give in? Pie
lduncan
People pay a lot of money for rust.
Pies
They do? WTF? Or have a missed something?
lduncan
I hear rowaphos isn't cheap. Phosphate removers are almost always pure rust. So if (when) the stainless steel clamp rusts, you'll get the added bonus of phosphate binding. Layton
Pies
Really? The Salifert stuff looks like rust, kinda. The ROWA looks like plastic beads from what i've seen and the Aquamedic stuff looks like Zeolite rock (Small grain 4-8mm). I've got access to lots of rust
lduncan
Salifert and Rowa are both rust. The difference between brands comes from the crystal structure, different manufacturing processes result in different structures, which is why colour and effectiveness can be different between products. The aquamedic stuff is aluminium based. Layton
Brianemone
the rowaphos is nasty little black gritty stuff. i couldnt reccomend it to be used in anything other than a fluidised reactor cause its so fine it even get through the sock they provide
