Caryl
Last night in the chat room Jude said her gouramis were going berserk, leaping all over the place and going nuts. All other fish were fine. We then hear on the news a big quake hit Sumatra in the early hours of this morning. Now, pearl gouramis come from this area - coinicidence? :-? Do gouramis have a telepathic link to their cuzzies in Sumatra?
Brianemone
the thing is that there is only one gourami with a nomral sized brain and thats the one in sumatra and that one brain controls all the little brains in gourami fish all around the world its like internet for fish
Shelley
a very creepy thought. they (whoever 'they' is) reckon pets know when something is going to happen cats horses dogs cows go nuts when there is some sort of weird weather pattern about to occur....it may not be as far off as you think Caryl having said that i didn't notice anything weird happening with my gouramis...and i was looking mighty close because i have been staying with a freind for a few days..... said hi to the family when i walked in the door...and went to tell my fish all about it ;-) (how sad is THAT!) lol
Shelley
lol Brian....does the same thing apply to men?

agoh
be weary of our local scene// there is active fault movement on our shores...as my sources indicate some activity on cookstrait
Shelley
LOL again Brian.... that must make life complicated. Flaming heck AGOH.....keep us informed...scary stuff indeed.
agoh
FYI: went on a small voyage offshore on wednesday lastweek and there is concerns about 'Booboo fault' off cookstrait, hence why the seafloor is being mapped extensively by NIWA/ heres an old article from GNS from 2004 explaining BooBoo http://www.gns.cri.nz/news/release/booboo.html its not a prediction / its a risk as far as these things go....when you guys talk about tsunamis - sumatra etc etc...we have our own coasts to worry about, today more than ever before..... (Completely off the realms of the standard aquarium tank but since we're on the topic of tsunamis)
Brianemone
today more than ever before :-? last time i checked earthquakes were'nt a new thing. unless your contact is friends with the earthquake gods i really wouldnt say things like,(siren going of in the middle of the night in the lower north islands and the people in the town waking up scared that there is a killer tsunami) scare mongering
Brianemone
dont worry alan, you still get to make a few choices by your self
agoh
brainemore I work at NIWA ocean geology...... its not a new thing... its not scaremongering...its reality....come out that aquarium bubble sometime, see the world and accept *reality*
Caryl
NZ is right on top of several major fault lines. They are always a worry and there is always active fault movement. I have never noticed my animals reacting pre-quake (indeed, my cat slept through the last one we had) but they said the local elephants all tried to head for higher ground just before the tsunami. Joze
my larger fish go down and stay down before an earthquake. Its well known that marine fish will do the same, ask any of the divers here.
agoh
it is a known fact that some fishes have highly developed 'vibrational' sense, and have the ability to detect earthquakes well in advance, (i.e. catfishes). they have a ultrasensitivity to low frequency vibrations. chimera
yeah, it's called "lateral line" system - a fishes 6th sense. nerve lines or something like that run down the length of a fish body to detect movement in the water. some sense vibration in the water alot better than others. Brianemone
sorry alan but even i am controlled by my wife agoh as you said its not a new thing and working in that feild you should know better than anyone that there is no more risk of an earthquake right now than there was 200 years ago, its not a stab at yoiu as much as it is at the media, it annoyed me when the tsunami hit and all of a sudden people start getting warnings about tsunamis in NZ
Joze
Mass hysteria Brian, it may happen no one really knows, but some people spend their days worrying about it, annoys the hell out of me too. Question is has anyone told them the earth is bombarded by asteroids and meteors everyday?
Brianemone
joze only people in america need to worry about astroids
agoh
yes theres alot of annoying media etc on these events...but think about awareness and being prepared ..thats why we're consulting with councils to properly plan civil defense procedures, coastal risk assessment, emergency response systems, thats why we modell the effects a shake might have to know potential consequences and who could be worst effected etc..these things are in place to save lifes and minimise dammage.......BTW: don't get me wrong I understand people being annoyed by media etc etc...but wareness leads to education leads to preparedness, means we can convince people to act on setting an infrastructure. okay enuff
Joze
LMAO Agoh you dont live in my area then, the council turned the flash flood alarm off because people may have mistaken it for a tsunami warning, and guess what, there was a large flash flood. 99% of people in our area dont even know what the civil emergency radio station is, and the council gives no information whatsoever as to which one it is. Only reason I find out there is a civil emergency is through a friend who is a paramedic. There will always be hysterical morons but there are a lot of practical sensible people around who are treated like infants by the authorities. How the hell do you expect people to be prepared if the basic alert system fails and there is no education or information? I know of one council which has a poison gas evacuation policy, the mill has a corresponding one, but if you dont work at the mill you know nothing about it. There is no such thing as too much information when it comes to civil emergency, unfortunately the population is treated as though they are idiots. agoh
wow...... yeah but in theory we need to be prepared and trust well developed good systems (not crap systems) you're saying is your council is **** reading that - fairenough
