What causes a guppy to be stressed

Poor water conditions, you can get test kits for ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate, as well as pH and a variety of others.

I assume you know about 'cycling' a tank when setting up a new one. If not, check in the Beginner's forum, bound to be several topics there about it.

Sticking your hand in will stress fish, vibrations (banging on glass, having fish next to stereo with loads of bass) will also do it, chasing them round the tank for an hour as they don't want to move to their nice big new shiny tank also stresses them out. Unsuitable tank mates will also cause fish to get stressed / eaten.

Too cold

Too hot

Rong pH

Big hungry fish that have bigger mouths than themselves.

Lackof shelter

Light colored gravel

Too brighter lights

Turning lights off and on, to darkness and from darkness.

In other words, sudden light variation

Poor water conditions from pollution, over feeding, dead tankmates.

Filter being off for a long enuf period to affect the bacteria in it.

Over aggressive advances by amorous mate.

Defending their territory.

Earthquakes.

Ya sure you want to keep fish??
