Tank Design:

‘braceless’ Look – 2x sheets on the bottom to provide a braceless look, but the entire length/width is actually braced with a whole piece of glass.

In this build, The fittings are all built onto the unit, so the sump and the tank can be as ‘closed’ as possible to allow minimal evaporation and smell escaping.

The Sump:

1600 x 500 x 500

Water Change System:

Moving on from my old set up of timers and a constant drip into the drum. I have had the opportunity to change that to a ‘one button operation’ wc system. The sump has a drain so it automatically drains the water as it is put in. The system is a smart relay system.

Press Button

Pump turns on

Level Switch detects low level

Pump off

Solenoid is triggered allowing water to refill the 200litre drum

Full level switch is triggered

Solenoid shuts and the cycle can begin again

I drilled a hole diagonally in the corner of my slab – I then fed a hose through it, into a conduit so it is out of the way and more discrete. Will bury hose under the soil too.

Lighting:

2x double 4ft T8, 1x single T8 (Daylight) , Internal submersible tanning light fitting, 2x 2.4M dim LED (Dusk/Moonlight), 2x Superbright 2.4m LED strip.

Light Progression

The tank as of 30/6/2013

Complete with substrate, wood and all the systems running.

So by layout you mean absolutely no decor haha. If we could get those black barred silver dollars in that 1st vid...

no, will have decor, wood mostly for royals. some caves for cichlids and cats.

but no substrate for starters, see how it goes.

I am heavily considering this.

http://www.petware.co.nz/Product/info/JW86930

its 60 by 55 cm

so height is perfect. length i would need 4 to cover the length of tank. an extra maybe to cover overflows.

it would look nice and siliconed on the tank before we put water in!

feedback would be great!

what is that huge fish on the bottom of the tank in this vid?

Australian lungfish. Very cool but on the CITES list so pretty hard to get.

Reptiles I've seen bigger glass tanks overseas, and there will be another slightly bigger on here soon.

Henward I'd think twice about the background if you're going to keep plecs. I've seen them destroyed by rays and I think panaques would be worse.

Yeha, davids tank is gonna be huge!

1000gallons ?

:D

the background is plastic, royals will eat through it.,

though to be honest, i dont mind if they look weathered . make sit look natural.

apparently the background can be cut, so i would probably do that to fit around the overflow and the actual overflow drain at the top of the water line.

that is an issue.

I just love that look - juwel sells a lot of this as well, quite common.

i am leaning heavily towards it.

the royal has plenty of wood and will have plenty of food in the tank.

I dont think they will prefer to suck on and scrape plastic vs algae wafers and smelly wood:D

I was really having doubts about the bare tank and bottom.

I like it to a degree, but to be honest, its quite sterile....

just keeps reminding me of those bare tanks in asia tha tlook like prisons more than aquariums lol

My plecs still rasped the background in my old tank with all the food and wood. They certainly look good, might look a bit strange with no substrate tho.

To get the 60cm water level how high will the overflow be?

yeah i love the look.

I th ink i will go with substrate. loks more natural.

i like bare tank cos its clean but really...

i wnt it to look natural and nice!

as for over flow.

water level will be 60cm max.

so overflow will prob start around 58cm, giving 2cm gap for whent he tank fills and delay in drain.

i dont think it willb e that much delay, i will have a rectangular overflow so there is more surface area.

i was considering a very thin over flow that is diagonal but so the backgrounds fit better.

but not sure if there is enough space for water to gather and drain in time.

I think i really wanna go for the natural look now i have been considering it more.

i would have the same sandy black substrate as before, i still have the substrate.

now i am having second thoughts on background!

just read that plastic plants etc can be rasped by the royal!

so they can get blocked up and die from the pieces!!!

gggrrrr

maybe then i may have to sacrifice the royal plecos :( IF i want the background.

have other plecs instead that doesnt have the ability to shred wood!

You could make a really cool background using thin bits of schist rock?

yeah, considred that, but gonna make the back panel way way too heavy.

not comfortable with that, extra weight that may alter the natural gravity of the tank.

I am posting on planet catifsh for feedback too.

maybe someone has experienced it

but i may have to forego the royals, stick to meat non wood eaters instead.

maybe blue phantoms again and the like.

the funy thing is, when i had heaps of royals,

they wre ALWSAYS on the wood.

they would also rasp algae on the walls but they generally stick on the wood and rasp that continually.
