bikerbabe
Hi. Am thinking about getting a canister filter for my 60LT Hailea tank. Pro's / con's? & what would you recommend I get? Also.. I have a 21 LT Blue Planet Hexi sitting next to the 60lt... can you run 2 tanks off the same canister filter? Thanks :cr1:
calculator
I am a fan of canister filters, they are great filtration, they dont take up much tank space, and can be hidden fairly easily which is good, the main downside I see to them is they can be a little bit of a pain to clean. As for using one to filter two tank, I can think of some complicated plumbing that might make it work, so theoretical yes, but practically if is just easier to run one tank off a filter. camtang
thumbs up for a canister filters, for your tanks you should be able to get one at a good price, it pays to shop around for them. As for cleaning, depending on what one you get will depend on the ease to clean it, but in general I find them easy to clean, quick, simple and not messy to do so
bikerbabe
Is there a brand you would recommend? not too expensive... or too noisy... oh.. & what sort of size filter for a 60lt? & how often do you need to clean them out? calculator
I use aqua one canisters, that is as far as my budget has ever stretched. I clean the filter pad whenever the flow starts to reduce, which is about once a month.
bikerbabe
How bout ones like these on TM for sale ? 541872066 Aqua One Aquis 500 542294046 Fluval 206 SunSun ones...??
SamH
Sunsun filters are good but the flow might be a bit much for a 21L, there should be some smaller canisters (200-600lph)
Barnacle
I have a small canister filter for small tank around the 20-40L mark. But its not ideal for where i have the tank situated and want to replace it with a internal, its about 4-5months old. (https://www.google.com/search?q=boyu+ef-05) Pm me if you might be interested. In regards to running 2 tanks from 1 filter, you need a reliable overflow from one to the other... otherwise one tank will get drained as the other one creates and indoor water feature. Best to stick with separate filters i think.
smidey
your 60T tank, does that have a hood and if so is there a place to put the canister piping through? IMO those tanks are too small for a canister, i have a 80L tank that i filter with two bubble filters which is more than enough.
Joe
For your 60L tank an Eheim Classic 2213 will be a good choice. I use Eheim Classic filters on all of my tanks and I absolutely love them!
Dachende
Just stick with an internal filter. I use a bt 400 on my 60l tank and it works a treat. Why do you feel the need to change to a canister ?
David R
60L ain't much space to play with, I think upgrading to an external filter (preferably with an inline heater) would be a great idea simply for cosmetic reasons. Big awkward filters and heaters look terrible in small tanks, IMO.

Agreed, to be honest, for your tank, i would not bother, the stock in a 60 litre tank will be minimal, an ehaim aqua ball or pick up or the fluval u series internal filters should suffice. canisters are good, but for that size tank, it will be overkill but also take up too much room and aesthetically wont look good. another thought, maybe get a bigger tank. :cr8:
Joe
If you like buying things from overseas, you could get an Eheim 2211 nano canister filter which is especially suited for small tanks. For some reason they aren't sold in NZ. I have one sitting in my closet that was brought in from overseas and was on TradeMe.
