Clearbear
i have a 200lt tank that i would like to stock with dwarf cichlids, i have a pair of blue rams already that are currently in a breeding tank but will be moved back in eventually so they fry can have that tank as a grow out tank. what other dwarf cichlids would be compatible with them? i was thinking about getting some apistogramma's if they are ok together? thanks. DennisP
In a 200L tank I imagine so... Rams are usually bigger though, so if there were to be problems the apistos would probably take a beating
Godly3vil
Rams and apisto's will be fine together in a 200ltr tank, depending on what other fish you want in there. You could probably have 2 pairs of rams and 2 pairs/trios of most apistogramma species. I keep a trio of A. Trifasciata in a 70ltr with 2 female bolivian rams with no problems. Just make sure you have plenty of plants/driftwood/rocks etc to provide enough refuges for them all and you should have no problems. Neons are a good fish to add, you could have a decent sized school in a tank that size with the dwarf cichlids, aslong as you have good filtration probably 20-25. Heres a good article on creating a good habitat for them; http://www.dwarfcichlid.com/Good_habitat.php
Clearbear
awesome thanks for the replies, i would really like a pair of apistogramma trifasciata, a. agassizi and a couple of Golden balloon rams. the breeding tank i set up is perfect for them at the moment and i am planning on doing a similar set up just on a larger scale for the 200lt. i will post a photo of the breeding tank when i next have time and see what you all think anyway Claire
Clearbear
Here is a picture of my tank, if i did something similar in my 200lt do you think that would be good? trying to make it look as natural as i can. and a couple of my blue ram pair because they coloured up into breeding colours today and they look really good (photos dont do them justice) :happy1:
F15hguy
Very nice, you might want to add some form of hard bottomed cave to prevent the rams from diggin too much
Clearbear
good idea! thanks for that
Godly3vil
Looks awesome! As for hard bottom cave you could just use a flat rock buried under the substrate, they love spawning on them.

Joe
Awesome tank! I'd only put one pair/trio of Apistos in there. Any more and they will probably fight. I've tried to put two pairs in a tank similar in size to yours and they were aggressive towards each other. However, you should be able to get away with keeping a pair of macmasteri and a pair of trifasciata together. I've found that these two species will coexist happily. But I'm not sure whether the mac's would bully the rams or not. Just try one pair/trio of Apistos for now and see how you go  Also I highly recommend trifasciata - great personalities, very colourful and they are also very active too and they don't hide away at all. karina
Hi Clearbear How long has your tank been setup? and how long have you had the rams? I and many others have tried to keep blue rams but with no success. I am starting to wonder if they prefer well established tanks. While I am here though I would like to ask if anyone has kept rams and apisto's with rainbow fish?
Clearbear
Hi there, this is a newly rescaped tank but has been used for around 8 months off and on (the breeding one pictured above), the 200lt ive had for about 6 months i think, brought it second hand, also been rescaped fairly recently. so they are not very old, i have never had a problem with these rams, the heater even managed to get left unplugged and didn't work for a night and they were fine, didn't even seem bothered and have coloured up into breeding colours after that happened (probably simulated the rainfall when they breed in nature) i think perhaps this pair was from the new imports as i have read that the new ones are a lot hardier than the previous imports? (i could be wrong about this). i have just been lucky to get this pair and to have had no problems with them. i have had the rams now for about 4-5 months i think. Claire. Clearbear
Hi Joe, i think i am going to try and find a trio of trifasciata, i have been wanting them for a while and are my favourite apisto that i have seen. they sound a lot like my blue rams so hopefully they will get along well. thanks for the advice. Clearbear
I just got a trio of trifasciata and 2 small macmasteri off Danival that will hopefully be here on friday :happy1: they should be ok in my 200 lt together since they are by themselves in there (except for a few tetras) with plenty of hiding spaces.
