snapperhead
Hi all, I'm in Wellington and have been keeping fish for :sage: 5 years, but never thought about taking my coldwater fish keeping hobby to the next level. All I've got so far is 2 fantails and a lot of ramshorn snails, but will get a whole lot of new additions to my tank. New additions will include freshwater mussels, freshwater shrimp, mountain minnows and borneo suckers. Well thats all for now, i'll be writing up a few questions
Sophia
Welcome Snapperhead there has been some informative and heated discussion on here about freshwater mussels recently.... I encourage you to read all about it using the search function

New additions will include freshwater mussels, freshwater shrimp, mountain minnows and borneo suckers. Welcome. I know that some places say mountain minnows are compatible with goldfish but my mountain minnows gradually disappeared from my goldfish tank until I put them into their own tank ( actually they're in a tropical tank being shared with some angels separated by a Hamburg filter. ). It may be that only comets are fast enough to catch them, and they might actually be safe with your fantails.
Caryl
Yes it depends on the type of goldfish. I have seen minnows living happily with fantails as they could not catch them.
alanmin4304
I would stay away from the mussels as they are taken from the wild, are almost impossible to feed and are more likely to survive in their habitat.
Insect Direct
Welcome snapperhead are mussels even still in shops? apparently they have been recalled from one of the big chain stores recently ...
snapperhead
are mussels even still in shops? Well I've recently been to a Pet Centre Store and saw that they had freshwater mussels in them. I have seen minnows living happily with fantails as they could not catch them What would happen to the minnows? :dunno: Do they get eaten/nibbled on? snapperhead
Eaten
Caryl
Not with the slower goldfish species as they could not catch them. The goldfish I saw were very large specimens and they totally ignored the minnows zipping about in the 5ft tank.
snapperhead
What types of goldfish won't be able to catch the minnows? Would keeping the goldfish well fed lower the risk of any fish wanting to prey among the minnows? I'll be sure not to put comets along with my minnows... GrahamC
I doubt any fancy goldfish would be able to catch the WCMMs. I don't know which ones ate mine, but I presume it were the comets ... though when I observed them I never saw them being chased. Sophia
Would keeping the goldfish well fed lower the risk of any fish wanting to prey among the minnows? . sometimes it's hard to make sure the slow moving fish get a good dinner when they share with fast moving little fish. The little ones often dash in and grab the food. I often feed the smaller fish first at the top and while they're busy send some sinking stuff down to the bottom or slower feeders.
