Discus Lifespan in NZ

Hi Guys,

I am finding a lot of varying reports on the average lifespan of Discus when looking around the internet. It appears that water quality has quite a bit to do with it. Anything from 3-15 years has been quoted on the sites that I have been looking at. Most of the information I have found come from people from contries with higher PH, which is less suited to Discus. I understand that New Zealand as whole generally has better water conditions for these fish also.

I would be interested to know what the average lifespan experienced by people here in NZ, and more relevantly, FNZAS forum Members who have more experience keeping these fish due to the demands of meeting the fishes high maintenance requirements, e.g regular water changes and quality foods.

many sites will quote lifespan as an average in aquaria. as we know, some die quickly, some dont.

as an example, arowanas can live to 25 yeras plus and there are examples of fish in farms that life around this age, and still going strong. but in asia, in the hobby, arowanas die much sooner, i think due to severe under filtration and constant exposure to toxins.... they may be ok, but its like a human, if you area smoker/drinker/drug taker, your likely to live a shorter life. there are always exceptions to the rule.

to fish i think toxins are just that, life shortening.

with discus, i see many breeders that refuse to accept that a good automated water change system is good.

only when they see signs of exposure then they change the water...

so imagine, if this was a human, dog, cat? you wait untill the animal is uncomfortable before you do something about it, instead of prevention? it doesnt make sense to me.

I've always hated it when people try to tell me that fish will only grow to the size of the aquarium, I always come back with "If I sold you a kitten and gave you a carry cage and said if you keep it only in here it will grow smaller"

some people don't like me
