zeebee
Hi guys, I am going to get some furan 2 today to try kill the blue green algae (cyanobacteria). Wanting to know if this would also kill brown diatoms?
blueether
I don't know if furan 2 will work. I believe that erythromycin is what is normally used for cyano
zeebee
Where do I get that from? Is it cheaper than furan?
alanmin4304
Legally it is dearer as you have to go to the vet and get a script. Furan works.
Joe
Just give the tank a blackout for three days. That will kill the cyano. Try and get rid of as much as possible first so there is less polution. I've done this before when I had cyano and it works wonders, not need for fancy chemicals and you can spend your money on more plants or something else

zeebee
I would do a black out, and have done in the past, however I have plants now, and scared they will die along with the cyano...

Joe
I had plants (not a lot though) when I had the cyano and they survived the blackout with no problems  I've found though that if the tank is chocca full with plants you shouldn't have any problems with algae at all. Caper
Does the 3 day black out work for all types of algae??? Just wondering :dunno: Thanks, Caper
Caryl
No but it can be extremely effective for cyano - depending on the cause. Cyano is not algae.
