I have bred them outside in a pond but only over summer. Don't forget that they jump (unless you get the trained ones from wok). They would be OK if the sides of the pond were raised a bit. Either one species with male and female or all males. Peat spawners tend to get velvet so do better in peaty acid water or with added salt (one teaspoon per gallon). If you put a lot of different males together it can look like world war three but in fact it is all bluff and bull. Like humans it is only the males that look good. Sorry I meant guppies.
