Fish dying :(

Zdoda

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

so within the last 3 - 4 days, i have noticed my fish dying at an alarming rate, i have probably lost close to 40 Neon tetras maybe more, and also my aggazi and 2 killies and scarlet badis + GBA &c:ry ... i am unsure what the heck is happening. But i found one killie fish that is practically on its last legs , tried to take photos of it. i suck trying to get a decent photo that or my cheap canon is horrible :(

Either way it looks to me as a type of fungus, though non of the neons or other fish showed this symptoms on them, i have tested the water twice with in the last 2 days, and no ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, ph is 6.8.

Again sorry for bad photo.

You should not have 0 for all 3. There should be some nitrate. Are you sure your test kit is OK?

What symptoms did they all show?

Yeah i am taking a water sample tmrw into HFF, too see if my test kit is knackered.

atm the symptoms they are showing, is all the fish is hanging at the bottom of the tank, looking lethargic which is bizarre since the neons and other fish were schooling all over the tank only a few days ago :(

That fish does look like it has bulging eyes, that is usually caused by poor water conditions but I know zdoda and he has done the tests so unsure what is happening there.. It is possible that the fish got the pop eye in its final stages.

You mention a fungus? Is it in tuffs on the fish or just a few patches or just a milky type slime on the fish?

Have you started with the basics? increasing your water changes to see if that makes a difference... increase oxygenation/surface movement, anything new to the tank fish, ornaments etc? The water changes and extra oxy may not cure them but it may help them survive longer until you sort out the cause.

Went over to zdodas house tonight to have a look, and the fish have some sort of spots on them I am not entirely sure it is white spot and if it is it certainly isn't a bad enough infection to kill yet.. Have suggested treating all the fish with wonder tonic/salt because that is a good general cure all with all sorts in it and probably one of the best places to start, will see how it goes..

My routine WC was twice as week, of 25% , one on monday, one on friday with same water temp as the tank. and i run two external canister filters on the tank, one sunsun, one Eheim 2075 Pro 3 . dose with prime and TLC Bacteria .

@ snowman - yeah i had done 70% water change on monday, i have 2 internal filters pumping just above the surface to create tons of oxygen in the tank. nope that's the weird thing nothing has been added other than fish so i :dunno:

@ Ryanjury - thanks again man, i have just set up the 1.2m tank for the fish that is still alive. got wonder tonic and salt in it with internal filter cranking. so here's hoping what ever it is is going to be killed.

i did however also , drain all the water from the tank out, and start again in case there was something in the water that was causing them to die, though no one in the house uses fly spray or anything that is harmful. doors are always closed.

gave me ability to catch all the dead decaying fish that i couldn't see in between all the plants so that was helpful.

going to be buying a UV filter tmrw from HFF, mainly for peace of mind if there is any parasite in the tank hopefully be killed. along with keeping tank extra clean for when i get the discus, though that seems a long way from now, since this disaster :tears: plus be good for when i increase the lights, i read UV filter helps kill some algae.

From now on going to quarantine every single fish i buy, regardless of where it came from. So less learn't the hard way lol :tears:

would this be suitable or a decent UV filter? tank is 375ltrs

The auction says it's for up to 200L so you'd want the 400L version if it's still available.

This is the one I got in the right size for your tank (I got the 18W version) - here. They sell the Jebo UV filters too but apparently they're a complete waste of money as they always leak. I've had no problems with my coralife one. It'll take 2-3 weeks max to arrive from fish-street but it sounds like you can't really wait.

Ah thanks man, was trying to remember the name you told me at the expo. Cool we'll 50/50 if i am going to get a UV filter yet, as unsure if it will rectify my problem.

nah should be alright if i go down that route to use fishstreet for 2 - 3 weeks, since i have placed the remaining fish in a quarantine tank with wonder tonic and salt.

I found 8 dead lemons tonight. Not sure what it is but I've done a huge water change and added prime and salt and put the UV filter on their tank so we'll see what's going to come of it.

ah that sucks man :(

any visible signs on the fish?

for me, one thing i just remembered was the neon's were sitting down the bottom of the tank, which is very unlike neons. so i am thinking it was more something in my tank terms of poison? though i could be completely wrong.

Stink. I hope it wasn't because of their trip away last weekend :(

Not at all, I suspect my wife overfed them while I was away and I didn't notice all the extra food in the tank. I haven't been paying much attention to them recently.

Strangely the ones that are sick are fully coloured up and not swimming too much while the rest are racing around the tank scared and nearly without any colour.

Back on topic - how many neons made it? Have any of the rest come right?

out at mates, but this morning, there's only 10 alive still. so thinking, just not going to even take a chance and put them back in, whats the best way to euthanize fish ?
