critter_crazy
So I've had this guppy for 8 weeks now, the whole time being pregnant (I am 100% sure she has not dropped) and now it's getting to the stage she's actually burst!! I really don't want her to die, is there anything I can do? Has anyone had this happen before? She's been squared off for 2 weeks now and seems healthy/happy otherwise. Below are two pics, first one is blurry but shows how squared off she is, second shows tear in body (from the gravid spot parallel to spine). SamH
Not sure if it's just the picture but that looks like almost all of my female guppies, except the ones who've dropped very recently. Perhaps the photo doesn't show it properly? But if it does, she's fine 8)
critter_crazy
I'm horrible at taking pictures  She's much bigger than she looks in those. I'm just worried because she's been pregnant for so long and seems to be internally ripping I hope she's fine! How often do your girls drop? SamH
Hard to tell really, I spot a new batch almost every week but I have half a dozen girls in the one tank.
Adrienne
is she in a net? you may find she won't drop unless she is in a tank.
critter_crazy
Nah, just popped her in the net to take photos. She's hanging close to the surface which she doesn't normally do, so I'm hoping she's getting ready to have her fry and not getting ready to die :nilly:
Sunbird73
Do a water change tonight and she might drop in the morning. I can't see anything of concern in the photo.
critter_crazy
I do a waterchange every second or so day but I'll give it a try. What about that rip down her side? Should I be worried about it?
burrowssj
I had a similar problem with my old guppy it held onto babies for ages when put in any trap then I took it out of breeding trap an it dropped overnight an all the babies were eaten. Next time I left her in the trap she stressed out stillborn all the babies an died. I reckon if the fish has any emotional value to you, just let it do its thing in the main tank an take the losses or else you could end up with nothing like me .(earthquake soon destroyed those tanks anyway but still) You say shes in the tank so you should be ok to leave her... critter_crazy
Yeap, she's just in the tank. I hate the idea of leaving fish in those little nets for ages I'll leave her as is, do a waterchange, and hope for the best!
burrowssj
not much else you can do anyways hope she makes it with a huge load of babies for you  guppies are so temperamental
critter_crazy
Me too! She's the only female I have of the strain so if she doesn't make it I guess I'll be having to outcross :nilly:
livebearer_breeder
I can't see a tear? is she bursting externally? or are you talking about her internal changes? She will get bigger than that before she releases, or at least mine do. Albinos are always a bit tricky, best thing to do is have plenty of floating plant and if one day u see albino fry you know yours is at least fertile enough to produce something. I've held onto fish for longer than a year before just hoping desperately for offspring but to no avail.
Sunbird73
I can't see a tear either. I can see the internal demarcation of an organ (swim bladder? I am guessing) that has been pushed up by the gravid spot. If there was a tear that went full thickness as you would expect if the internal pressure was too great, you would also get some of the internal organs hanging out, so would look more like a growth coming off her side (hernia). From the photos, I can't see anything abnormal. I think because she is a blonde guppy she is more translucent than a other guppies.
critter_crazy
Oh thank goodness, I thought that little squiggly line was an internal tear as its only on one side No fry overnight but from the sounds of it she's going to get a lot bigger. I'm still a noob with breeding  My other female has dropped twice now in the time I've had this one :yaw1:
Sunbird73
I have had a guppy that I bred that got to be HUUUUGE, her first drop ended up being about 3 months later than some the same age. But when she did drop she had a LOT of fry. We just called her fattyfattyboom-ba :sml2:
critter_crazy
Here's hoping this one gives me a lot of fry too  She's definately a bit of a fatty!
critter_crazy
Looks like my timing was pretty spot on! Just watched her give birth to 12 (I think) tiny pink babies :happy1:
livebearer_breeder
Awesome! 12 is a good number of albinos, now grow them out. hopefully you get a higher ratio of females, then each of them produce 12 and so on and so forth until you are the mighty wielder of the house of albino poecilia, the hand of the freshwater mid lands, feared amongst most regular fish. critter_crazy
:rotf: Here's hoping!! I'm not sure if all 12 will survive, 8 are free swimming but 4 are still kinda resting at the bottom and only swimming occasionally. Still, better than nothing, I was begining to think she might be infertile or just have stillborns
