The thing with IT products is they are superseded so fast.

Your prob going to have to face it that you will not get what you want for it unless it is something rare or current.

Same goes with TV's etc. The technology changes so fast that no one really wants old models.

You may be lucky to find someone willing to pay what you want but the looking for that someone can be frustrating.

If the laptop cost more than $2k 2 years ago, you might be able to get $500 for it. You'd have to play the waiting game though. As said by others, there are many cheap new laptops available now and there are heaps of 2nd hand ones available too. Let us know the specs.

When I worked in IT we had a 3-5 year write off, after that time it went in the skip.

I am sure there are plenty of charities that would happily take older computers. Not sure about facilities for recycling electronics in NZ.

Apparently if they were to start mining the rubbish dumps in Japan they would have higher outputs of a variety of metals than many major mines. It is feasible and will start eventually.

Waterlogged - maybe you could sell it for a little pocket money, but not hundreds. It might be worth more in feel-good points to give it away to a friend or relative (or charity).

That said, I am nursing along a 7 year old laptop, was higher spec when new, a few years ago I trebled the harddrive capacity to 80GB and recently doubled the RAM to 1GB. It is slow but functional as a secondary computer for school. I will be happy if it survives another year but not expecting it to.

Even when I was in IT (7 odd years ago now) bigger 'charities' like schools didn't want old warn out computers, I tried many options because we had to pay for them to be scrapped. When you are getting rid of hundreds at a time that all require hard drives wiping there are aren't many options.

Alternatively, just hang on to it! The laptop which I am now typing on is approximately 5 years old (a geriatric in geek years) and I have considered upgrading many times but I knew that I would never get a decent amount for it and I couldn't stand the thought of throwing away a functioning laptop. Long story short, I'm writing on a Windows XP, 1.73 GHz laptop with a miserly 80GB of memory. Ironically, my iPad doesn't get as much of a workout as this old horse, but by now it's sentimental haha (and I like to see the faces of friends when they see my laptop specs :o)

Resist the urge to sell.. Save up and get a new one, but who knows? Maybe you can sell your HP as a relic in a few more years lol..

Yeah, good point Ally.

My laptop was needing a serious upgrade of RAM and harddisk space but that was looking expensive and a risky investment for something that might die soon anyway.

Eventually I decided to buy a secondhand desktop PC for at home (circa 2007 but with KICKASS specs compared to my laptop, and a big LCD screen, trademe $300). Doubled my laptop RAM for $50 and have now stripped back all my programs and documents to needed-for-school-only so the poor thing has some room to work. The laptop now lives at uni locked to my desk.

Maybe saving the laptop for an alternative purpose may work for you?

Doubled my laptop RAM for $50

Seems most laptops are SERIOUSLY in need of ram upgrades. Most laptops I've used run like absolute crap. Most seem to come with the absolute minimum(Or less) ram they need.

Maybe saving the laptop for an alternative purpose may work for you?

If it has hdmi out, cheap media pc.:)

To be honest, don't use a laptop unless you absolutely need it on the go. After 5 years of laptopping, i'm going to save up a bit later this year and get a good CPU, hook it up to a nice tv and go wireless keyboard/ mouse with some nice speakers for an all round media experience haha..
