Hybrids (other than african)

I was wondering what sort of hybrids have been bred here, overseas I have seen a texas/jag cross and a jag/dovii cross and thought they looked pretty awesome. Does anyone here have some interesting hybrids? Saw a jd/jag cross on tm not too long ago but it didnt look spectacular.

lol no comment on the hybrids they can create some cool morphs but cause issues when they get out there and end up with different names or confusion over ID..

There was a wicked thread on cichlid forum a while ago with all the hybrids people had created and there were some awesome fish in there I can't seem to find it now though :(

I tend to agree, but flip back and forward, im generally fine with the hybrids, im generally not fine with people selling them on. Breed them by all means, but cull the fry that you dont want and keep a cool specimen for yourself and a few responsible individuals. Otherwise you will end up with the hybrids mixing with the 'true' spp and mixing up the gene pool... Well i guess thats what could happen in nature anyway, so is it so wrong?? Oh the debate. Im having a mad internal debate of my own

Flowerhorn anybody? haha Out there now and maintaining themselves as a spp.

Few blue/normal dempsey hybrids (and a whole heap of fry) on tm at the moment that i dont think should be let out to the public. Will probably just get sold off as normal morph JD's by the new owner.

When you get a red texas David let me know

Well, I think that when a line becomes too diluted and the quality of a strain becomes poor is when hybridisation is a bad thing. Also, when the original specimen becomes scarce in the hobby and the genetic pool shrinks, I think that is another bad reason for hybridisation.

On the otherhand it is possible to create some really mint crosses, personally i am no fan of parrots or flowerhorns, but these ones are cool:

Jeez that hybrid forum on MFK is a whole different world of fish keeping, so many new/different names/hybrids/morphs etc.

They seem pretty ruthless with what they breed together and keep going for generations with the crosses/line breeding/selective breeding/inbreeding etc etc

The end product must be such a mixture of alot of things that many crosses/generations on.

Some nice fish there, some not so.

Liking the bichir hybrid dave.

Yeah I agree with Jaxxnz on that one, the endli/ornate cross is probably the nicest hybrid bichir, I also like ansorgi/lapradei which looks good too. I would be keen on seeing arowana crosses, I think a fusion of the black and silver aros could turn out some really interesting colour differences especially in the fins.

Fexus is the way to go Dunc!!

I'd love to see someone with an interest in arfican cichlids stop being such a purist and start selectively breeding and crossing to make some interesting morphs. Look at what has been done with [by comparison] relatively drab wild discus, imagine starting off with fish as vividly coloured as electric yellows etc...

Plenty of people overseas already doing this this is where our dragonsbloods and other random peacocks come from :) It would be cool to try and breed something new and try and fix it but it would take a long time and lots of tanks to get anywhere and you would question if it was all worth it, well I know I would :)
