Caryl
Just cut it off and replants the tips.
alanmin4304
It grows best when cut short otherwise the lower parts go black from lack of light.
Joe
I grow mine in a terracotta pot with sphagnum peat moss, 2x JBL Root balls and a thin layer of sand over the top, and it goes mad! I've never had problems with the lower parts going black. It also shares the pot with some Cryptocoryne balansae.
malevolentsparkle
ah so they're root feeders? surprising for a stem plant
Joe
I didn't say that. I just said that mine grows well like that, and I suppose all plants would do well if the are given some sort of nurients, wether it be in the water column or the substrate. But it isn't a root feeder.
malevolentsparkle
ah ok. might trim it a bit more than i have been to avoid the black leaf problem. I fertilize the water rather than the substrate but i might pick up some JBL Root balls at some point. they will be good for my swords too
dreams
If there is very little light getting to the lowerparts of the plant, it will rot. But the tops will continue to grow, sending roots into the substrate to hold its self down. It loves bright lights, mine mostly take in ferts from the water column. To keep it looking good all the time, you have to either trim off the bottoms and replant the tips every once in a while, or give it good trims each week - depending on how fast it grows
