gagaforfish
Corys can live in cold water. right? How would I go about acclimatizing them? My brother is buying six, and plans to put them with his goldfish, is this okay?? Thanks!!
Joshlikesfish
I think HFF sells them in the coldwater section?
gagaforfish
Oh, do they? Might have to go check it out.. Don't normally look at the coldwater section!!
Joshlikesfish
I think they do. But IDK if cories and goldfish would be ok
phoenix44
Here we go again  Cories never have and never will be coldwater fish. Some, not all can survive in cooler, often temperate water.
Joshlikesfish
Cories never have and never will be coldwater fish. Why not? I'm sure you could evolve them to handle cold water. Might not be in our day but in a few generations... It was only a few years since I bought my coldwater swordtails and cories from animates. Got a cory from HFF too back in the day

ryanjury
Alot of fish will survive and even do well down to around 20C but anywhere below that they usually start to suffer..
phoenix44
Well mountain minnows, shubinkins, black moores, calicos, leopard fish. As ryan said, 20C at lowest possibly. That's relatively temperate. It is not coldwater. These fish are tropical. S. American and all. Would you put your clown plecos in cold water?
Joshlikesfish
They could evolve over generations to adapt to that temperature. Just saying...
Joshlikesfish
What can you put with goldfish?? There isn't really anything that can go with goldfish. I've seen a type of sucker fish, borneo sucker IIRC for sale with goldfish at animates
phoenix44
evolve? No they cannot. If by evolve you mean survive, I'd be more likely to accept that unwillingly. borneo sucker IIRC for sale with goldfish at animates again, temperate not cold water. tell them that. gagaforfish
So the corys will survive around 20C?? I think some winter mornings the tank is around 18C, but most of the time it is around the 20-21C mark..
Joshlikesfish
evolve? No they cannot. If by evolve you mean survive, I'd be more likely to accept that unwillingly. Why not? bdspider
I don't think you know how evolution works at all there....
phoenix44
over millions and millions of years overcoming geographic barriers. maybe you need to read a little more about evolution...
Joshlikesfish
I don't think you know how evolution works at all there.... Would adaptation be the word then?
Joshlikesfish
over millions and millions of years overcoming geographic barriers. maybe you need to read a little more about evolution... Adaptation then. The biological phenomena where an animal adapts to better suit its habitat? The few was sarcastic btw. Like if I said you only have to buy a few lotto tickets to win the big one...
bdspider
The gene pool would need to have the gene present that allows them to survive in colder water. Then the corys with that gene would be selected for. It doesn't just appear because of conditions. New genes can only occur due to mutations and then the environment (could) favours the new gene. Joshlikesfish
I am not getting into another coldwater debate on here Josh. Do as you wish. You don't believe adaptation is possible? It naturally occurs in pretty much every species. But alright. We'll leave it at that
alanmin4304
Tolerate may be a better word. Some fish or animals may tolerate conditions outside of what they generally prefer but usually only for a short time and generally they do not do well. A bit like trying to work out why growing tropical fruit in a snow storm causes problems. Tropical fish are tropical fish.
