Sweetysmum
Hi Livingart I took Calypso to the vets today to check on that other problem and he tested his faeces and the pinworm eggs have increased quite a lot from his last check - so he wants to see another sample in a months time. Calypso has paper towels for his substrate and corrugated cardboard under that. I change his paper towels every week but occassionally it has gone two weeks, but whenever he messes I take it out straight away or as soon as i see it. I thought about washing his enclosure out in case there are eggs about. Would you have any recommendations on what to use to wash/sterilize everything, that is safe for beardies but would get rid of pinworm eggs. Thanks. phoenix44
paper towels and card are far from ideal and make a good host for bacteria and other organisms when they get soiled. Astroturf would be much much better.
repto
astro tuff would also be better for holding pinworm eggs? Have 2 or 3 that fit your tank and soak them in virkon or some other sanitising agent.Hang out to dry and air for as long as possible between using each one. Sweetysmum
Oh I didn't realise ..... thanks guys ...... Repto, do you use astroturf as well, or something else?
livingart
the eggs don't handle heat too well astro turf is good
repto
I don`t see why the vet should wait and see if the pin worm eggs are increasing since last time? Why you not just treat for an infection and eliminate the worms? They must be coming from the beardy? Jennifer
The paper towels are much more hygienic than turf, as long as you change it regularly. The pinworms are transmitted via the faecal-oral route so cleaning up droppings is very important. These parasites are very common and they don't usually cause disease unless the animal is debilitated or conditions are right so that is probably why your vet is just watching it. If the animal has diarrhoea or weight loss then clinical disease may be present and treatment may be necessary. Treatment usually consists of fenbendazole once a week for two or three weeks.
