DennisP
As title says... Not sure if the thread goes here or in the cichlid forum but oh well... One of my royals keeps latching onto the larger 2 discus in my tank and I wonder how harmful this is and whether it will stop or there is something I can do to make it stop? phoenix44
Doesn't the fish swim away?
Caryl
I have heard of the Chinese algae eaters doing this. I believe they like sucking the slime coat off the discus. I don't know if it is good for them though (the whiptail or the discus) :-?
DennisP
They do try to, but the whiptail doesn't give up. It does this multiple times an hour...
David R
Its not going to be making the discus very happy, could stress it out and lead to all sorts of problems. Probably best to separate them.
DennisP
Sadly true... =[
phoenix44
It is weird behaviour, that's for sure. I had one royal that used to swim across the tank, but no whiptail of any sort has ever latched on to another fish, so it definitely is not the norm. Try a red whiptail if you like, they are pretty cool too.
DennisP
I might see if I can trade it back to my LFS... Do shops do that?
phoenix44
Probably not... well not for what you paid any how. but maybe if you explained the situation they might be able to work something out.
DennisP
They know me well. Was thinking maybe I can get store credit from it or something...
phoenix44
I think you might have more luck if you asked if you can return the royal and pay the difference for a red.
Ira
I might see if I can trade it back to my LFS... Do shops do that? Yeah, see if they'll take the discus back. Maybe they'll give you store credit or swap you for some good fish.
DennisP
Yeah, see if they'll take the discus back. Maybe they'll give you store credit or swap you for some good fish. I thought of this as well last week as my b-day is coming up soon... Could buy a whole lot of cool fish.

Adrienne
Whiptails are not recommended for discus tanks because of this tendency.
DennisP
Have put them in a smaller tank for now with my 1 Eel... Will get rid of them soon I guess. =[
