Joshlikesfish
Is solder aquarium safe? Was going to use as a weight.
ryanjury
I wouldn't use it, alot of solders are lead based (although this is not so much anymore) but most of them have a resin based flux core which wouldn't be so good for fish I would imagine.. Jennifer
There is quite a lot of research about the detrimental effects of lead fishing weights on the health of aquatic species. Lead poisoning is cumulative (builds up over time) and some of the first effects are behavioural/mental/cognitive. Would you be able to tell if your fish was starting to go a bit nutty? Ira
Hahaha, The irony of this, "Lead in the tank is bad!" thread along with the other "Lead weights are ok!" thread.
smidey
i wonder how many people use the lead weights they get with plants
phoenix44
almost all. i wonder how many people use the lead weights they get with plants Plus you can buy lead free soldering stuff.
Jennifer
I am sure the effects would be more likely to show up in long living species, especially those that are kept for a number of months/years in the same environment. Of course acidic water conditions would be much more likely to leach out the lead. Would be very unfortunate to buy a seemingly healthy fish off someone who had been keeping lead in the tank...ticking time bomb.
Scottie841
the issue is not the lead it is the flux they use in it. It would be like putting paint stripper in to the tank
HaNs
Yeh, flux cored solder wouldn't be good. That stuff is nasty, spent friday soldering wires.
alanmin4304
The biggest poisonous effect with lead in water is shot gun pellets that aquatic birds pick up in their crop.
ryanjury
Yeah most solders are lead free these days it is industry standard, but from someone who has done many many hours of soldering and I do it almost daily at work the flux is pretty nasty stuff I wouldn't want it in my tanks.. Ira
Just use pebbles and rubber bands, cable ties or string.

markvs
For a bottom weight why not use unpainted iron? As it rusts away, it might release iron for the plants??
phoenix44
plants don't use that sort of iron.
Jennifer
Rust is a complicated electrochemical process. In that system, there would be phases of soluble iron (Fe2+) that would be usable to plants (albeit unstable, but that is true for our fertilisers too). It is also a myth that plants cannot absolutely use oxidized iron (Fe3+). Here is a research article that I looked up last month that clarifies the issue: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/jour ... 1&SRETRY=
phoenix44
and how much Fe2+ -> 3+ would the plants be able to use? -your link is logged into wiley. what's the name and isbn for the article?
Jennifer
-your link is logged into wiley. what's the name and isbn for the article? Try this. http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi- ... 8/PDFSTART I have no idea how much plants can use. I am sure there is more recent evidence that says as much, but if not, perhaps you can start a research study to find out?
Joshlikesfish
For a bottom weight why not use unpainted iron? As it rusts away, it might release iron for the plants?? Rust is the production of an iron oxide? Man chemistry gets boring. Here we go!  Was for fighter fry but i'm going for the bottled method
Kyle Steel
Can you use a lead sinker to solder?
