phoenix44
There isn't a lot of information available online about these guys, but from what I see they are quite shy and will prefer being in groups. I have read they are hard to keep alive, and are very sensitive to water conditions, but I can't comment on that. Apart from that they should retail for under $20 each, so not expensive either; and very unique! !drool: I also like how they twitch. MarkLB
Pics of your cardinals! Snapped this tonight. This isn't all of them but the school seems smaller than I remember. Natural attrition I guess. I need more Excuse the bits floating in the water, I'd just fed them.
phoenix44
That's utterly awesome! They do tend to split up occasionally, but it's a sight when they shoal together!

I love Cardinals !drool: :happy1: I'd get them but I also really like Hemigrammopetersius caudalis and I want to get these, and the two don't look good together, especially because of the huge size difference and the fact that they both need to be kept in shoals. Plus the colours clash a wee bit. I wish my parents would let me have more tanks
phoenix44
Got 4 more cardinals today. :happy1: Also added some E. amazonicus courtesy kipper. You know you're addicted to plants when you say yeah, it'll fit and then cram it into the tank somewhere. Fed the cardinals and discus hundreds of mossie larvae today. They look thrilled. I've also been rather inspired by carlos and siran's hydrocotyle on wood thing, so I've done something similar with my moss wood.

Sophia
when I first fed my fish mozzie larvae they didn't realise they were going to move so quickly and it took them a moment to realise they actually had to try and catch the faster ones
phoenix44
Lots of pics time. :happy2: This is the first time (I think) I have photographed my blue snakeskin discus. I think they are 4 months old now. Playing with ISO setting (ISO 100) Hungry, happy discus! Headstander- Cardinals! FTS-
the-obstacle
Holy Crap! That is truly stunning! I've seen the shots separately before but putting a bunch into a single post like that has really highlighted the awesomeness of your tank. Reckon I can recreate that in a 700L tank? I seriously doubt it.
phoenix44
 Thanks! It's a 225L tank without the gravel, plants etc. Reckon I can recreate that in a 700L tank? I seriously doubt it. Easily! This tank is a piece of cake to recreate once you have the lights and CO2 on a larger tank. Only problem I foresee is actually going out and buying so many different plants. Not all are stem plants so take ages to grow, and when they do you don't want to take them out. When I do large crops, the water level in the tank actually drops I want to do something like this in a tank of similar dimensions but much much wider, so I have more space to play with. All the equipment I have can stay the same, just a larger tank and I'd be thrilled. Maybe another light hood for good measure.
the-obstacle
You've got me wanting to flag the geos and go fully planted once again. I've got 2 150W halides and a 4 foot 36W *2 T8 unit. Once the co2 setup is acquired I'd like to see what can be done. Have you found you've done better since going to your own concoction of fertilisers? Have you found you've done better since going to your own concoction of fertilisers? Do it! I think my ferts are working better than comprehensive did. The green spot has vanished even in areas that I never ever cleaned, and wanted it growing on like the RHS pane of glass. Any pictures of your catfish tank P44? This is the catfish tank 10 sterbais 12 brochis splendis 6-8 L066 (can't remember if it's 6 or 8) 2 lancelotas 2 reds 3 'black' whiptails :an!gry 12+ spotty BN I'm sure there is more too... :nilly: Thanks 89. phoenix44
Oh, I thought you had 2 different setups going there, nice tank for them! Do you see them much or do they just hide? What other setups do you have? I see them all the time actually. Well as much as I would want to see them really. Don't like seeing fish all the time. I prefer it when I see the odd fish here and there with a few hiding here and there. Always a surprise to be had! I have sold a LOT of the plecos in the tank though. Compared to what I normally stock in there. Ah well. Can always get more later on. Apart from this one I have an empty tank with sand and a shell; awaiting shellies. Then there is the koura tank, the moss tank (just a tank with moss + water). Then the crypt tank which is a 68L nano with hundreds of crypts. Post is in the plants section. You told me they were the rio ones? :dunno: That is them. I just didn't want to start an all out war in this thread. The "Rios" were imported and sold as Spotted BN. WOW :happy1: You have one of the best tanks in history Not even! I just take elements and plants from other tanks I like and do things in my own way. That way the tank does not fit in a square box and doesn't conform to any of the standard rules of a tank style or type. I just prefer it that way. I look at plants I like; track them down in NZ, source them and then away I go. I see tanks that I like on the net ALL THE TIME! But then I think about it and after considering how much work they are I prefer my own way of doing things. It's just easier. Plus I like having lots of fish in the tank, and too many planted tanks don't have a lot of fish. Always best to seek inspiration and put your own unique twist on things. phoenix44
I "ID'd" yours based on a vague approximation and your terrible description of a fish that did not look like mine, but was a BN and was bought privately as spotted BN and not through a store as either spotted BN or Rios. First you said they were spottys, then starlights. Then I distinctly told you I won't be IDing them without a picture. It would be stupid to do so. So don't go saying that I ID'd them, because I wouldn't without a pic - a clear pic that is more than just a blur that could be any thing from a piece of wood to a dead fish. I said yours aren't rios if they do not look like the hundreds of other spottys around NZ or mine for that matter. I also said yours aren't starlights, because any one buying starlights would have bought them as starlights because there are only a few people here breeding starlights. They certainly have not been imported recently. I then directed you to my threads on here and on FK about the spotty bns and all the debate about that. Then I told you to search the PC threads that were started. If after all that you are uncertain of what you have - start your own thread on here / PC (don't expect much help on there if you don't know exactly what part of the river they were caught from) and ask for the answers you seek. That is if you actually seek answers and are not looking to justify an ID that is shaky at best. Did I ID your fish? No I did not. No more than I would have ID'd a panaque as being that "fish that eats wood".

phoenix44
Well! What a crazy three hours it's been. The tank is still a work in progress but after a lot of hacking away at the plants this is what I have done - Now I need more cardinals.
