phoenix44
Can any thing be done to save a tame pet rat that has most likely ingested rat poison? He is quite sick, colder than normal, odd - dwadling movements when he does move. He has been given glucose for energy (with water) but it has not made too much of an improvement as far as energy levels are concerned. He is being kept warm and has a supply of food. Can I give him some raw meat?
livingart
vitamin k may work but alas may be too late
Vinnie
What kind of rat poison as some rat poisons are (from what i've been told) deadly one the rat drinks water. If possible could you make the rat throw up? that would help get any poison out of its gut
imsweet
Rat poison is designed to thin the blood and make them bleed, so like LA said , vit k but i'd say too late.
phoenix44
he is not bleeding at all. he was lost for 3 weeks, and found today. so i took him home to take care of him. I am hoping its just sheer dehydration but perhaps I am being far too optimistic for my cynical self.
livingart
bleeding is internal do its lungs sound raspy
DonnaM
My understanding is its internal bleeding. Not something you'd visibly see. Years ago I had a puppy eat rat poison at a friends and it was a quick trip to vet to make it throw up. From memory.... the Vet said if we hadnt realised, puppy would have slowly bled to death internally and once it got too far, was irreversible. As others said, a shot of Vit K is an option if got quickly enough after the poisoning.

phoenix44
his gut feels like it is riddled with small stones.
Jennifer
Take him to a vet. It depends on the type of rat poisoning. But the most likely kind needs to be treated with emesis or stomach tubing with activated charcoal and then several days of vitamin k dosing and good supportive care. Act quickly and it may be possible to save him.
HaNs
Im sorry But why bother? Yes you may have become attached, but it is suffering from internal bleeding or other issues.
