phoenix44
oh wait. its not like in the states then.. where you dive into other people's trash and find 'perfectly good food' among other things im sure. this is more like foraging. Southerrrngirrl
I totally thought you were talking about raiding your local KFC skip bins before I clicked. And who knew blackberries grew out in the ocean!
phoenix44
apparently there is a fig tree in wellington. I like figs. maybe i could convince scottie and tania to "forage" with me... I could keep a look out. mmmmm// figs
Scottie841
I would just buy the figs. By the time you drive down her and get them you would have spent more on gas than you would save foraging... Oh and I am lazy and foraging requires effort
Jennifer
LOL, definitely no dumpster diving. In fact, I won't eat anything that is a day past the 'best by' date! I just bought some figs at New World and they were so skanky and tasteless. I would kill to find a fig tree with beautiful ripe fruit. When I was a kid my mum used to take me out blackberry picking by the river and the berries were so plump and juicy from the constant river water on their roots - warm from the summer sun they just melted in the mouth. We would gather a big bucket of them and she would take them home and make the most beautiful blackberry pie with sugar dusting the golden crust....mmmmmmmmmmm
Zev
Jen, you are going to make yourself sick thinking like that...
Jennifer
lol, I already am..... I guess it shows that I forgot to have breakfast and dinner today... I would get off the couch to get a chocolate egg, but it is too cold...feels like winter... smidey
I would get off the couch to get a chocolate egg, but it is too cold...feels like winter... i got my canterbury sheepskin slippers out tonight (how gay am i??? it's worth it for warm feet) this foraging thing sounds alot like the 70's when people had fruit trees & gardens
alanmin4304
Jennifer, you probably drive past a few fig trees on your way into town. Ask me where when you are around.

I could keep a look out. mmmmm// figs There's a fig tree in Palmy, or there used to be 20 years ago, just up Roberts drive by the big red tomato on Napier Rd, on the left hand side as you're going up the hill, we used to get figs there all the time. meh, sorry, just checked on google and it's all changed, no fig tree, even the big red tomato's gone
Caryl
Our paper recently listed all the known places to get free food around here. It included all sorts of fruit and nut trees and various berry fruits etc. Very interesting. My dad gathers walnuts from the trees in the park next door then shells and sells them. Southerrrngirrl
I recently discovered acorn & chestnut trees in our local arboretum. Took 2 chestnuts home, googled to see what I could do with them, only to learn they were in fact horse chestnuts and apparently not edible. Apparently we could have a good game of Conkers with them though!
Zev
Oooh conkers - had many a bruised knuckle from that game!
