I got an Email from Ecan (Canterbury Regional Council) the other day confirming that all straight Vallisnerias are prohibited nation wide but twisted ones are not (yet?). The twisted ones usually go under a number of names. Torta (aka tortafolia) is the shorter, wider variety with not much twist and brittle leaves. Contortionist is the taller variety with more twist and is the one in the picture. Spiralis refers to the flower stem and is one of the banned straight leafed varieties.

Hopefully it wont be prohibited. Atleast until I can get a bigger tank and get some for it.

So what is the scientific name of that one Alan? V. contortionist?

Found this

Scroll down to VALLISNERIA variations.

Oooh that was Freshwest's old tank, that was awesome!

If he/she is still surfing the forum perhaps he/she can confirm??

alanmin4304 sounds spot on though

Yeah, it doesn't like Flourish at all... It is very fragile too. Crispy!

On the plantgeek site they call torta---V. americana v. " Biwaensis, and contortionist is Vallisneria sp. "Contortionist"

Cheers Alan. Learn something new every day.
