phoenix44
Actually another 2! Fish 1 Fish 2 Now I think I know what they are, and I don't want to reveal it unless I get an ID from other people too, so lets play the guessing game. kiwiplymouth
I have decided that the best and most reliable way to ID a pleco is to see a pic of it in water and unstressed so im not playing

kiwiplymouth
sorry, i couldn't resist sounding like i know something about these stripped jersey wearing BN's just once. :-? We all have our species that we tend to specialise in. I thought that I had got myself a nice group of lithobates until Ryan turned up and burst my bubble. It turns out that the only similarity they have with lithobates is that they both originated from Africa
Adrienne
well Phoenix - am I even remotely close???
phoenix44
ha ha yea adrinne, you are. its either them or maccus depending on the teeth on the mouth. its just that these are really small and being able to see the teeth may be a mission. you should check yours out and take a clear pic if you can. Adrienne
well mine look way more like that than the last pic I saw of maccus posted on here. Trouble is they don't actually appear to be photographed. There is quite a difference in the markings of some of them too. Some are way more blotchy and the others are well defined. If I want to catch one and handle it for a pic whats the best way to go about it?
phoenix44
if you have a spare small tank, best to put it in that, focus in well and take a few good clear shots. if not i would just grab it and take pics of its teeth. kiwiplymouth
are they fryeri? who you get them from? I got them on trademe. They look similar to young dragon bloods. Not having seen young lithobates before, I just assumed that was what they looked like. Ah well lesson learn't

phoenix44
just got a little more complicated. i am near certain that these are clowns, not pecklotias.
flatfish
It looks like a clown pleco, Panaque maccus to me. If you look up Pretty Peckoltia on the net they refer to Peckoltia pulcher, which is not a valid species name. I'd say by the teeth pattern (and the price Pretty Peckoltias are selling for) they are clown plecos.
Adrienne
as I said they look like my 'pretty peckoltias' which when they came in people thought were maccus.
phoenix44
I still think that the "pretty pecklotias" are indeed panaque maccus. After looking at everyone else's fish and then after getting some myself, looking at the juvi colours and pattern, teeth, mouth etc. I am even more certain of it.
