livingart
it might be cheaper just to walk down to the beach to get a closer look seriously are you wanting one to watch the stars with?

Barrie
Jim, I studied the solar system for a few years and had/have countless books on the subject, really enjoyed it. I started building a 10inch but never completed it but did buy a 6inch. I used it a few times then gave it to a mate as when I would go to the Hubble site and see those photos, I felt so dissapointed in what I was able to see Yes, you need to experiance the night sky with your own enhanced eyes but my advice is to keep to a lesser budget untill you know in which direction you will head. The 6inch could easily see the rings of Saturn but you always want to see more and Hubble enables that... I wonder what ever happened to all my books
Southerrrngirrl
My husband is into telescopes and astronomy/astrophotography and he offers the following advice. First thing you need to understand is that you will never see anything like what Hubble does with the naked eye. Hubble's pictures are the result of long exposure photography. This process allows us to see colour that we would not normally see with the human eye. I recommend http://www.nztelescopes.co.nz. They are a Timaru based photography/telescope shop and they have some of the best prices around that I have seen in New Zealand. Make sure to check out the "Types of Telescopes" link on their site. This will give an explanation of the various designs. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask.

Tracey
If you're after a good starter scope that gives you a good field of view, good magnification but won't break the bank until you're sure you really want to, I'd recommend these guys http://www.astronomy.co.nz/pub/TelescopesTemp.asp My mother brought one of their 8" Newtonian Dobsonians and it is a great scope, bulky but relaly good optics. If you decide later that you want something a little more portable, you should try your local astronomical society or one of the other regional ones. That's how I got my Celestron C8 pretty cheap.
